[Solved] Getting xwayland into a working state

Hi, as mentioned in the thread Wayland on Arch Linux? I've just setup a fresh arch linux installation for testing wayland.

What I've done so far:
- I'm on a wayland only archlinux installation, so no X except xwayland
- xwayland-git from AUR is installed
- xf86-video-ati-xwayland-git from AUR is installed
- I'm in the weston-launch group (as proposed here)
- xwayland.so is successfully loaded: [01:27:57.905] Loading module '/usr/lib/weston/xwayland.so'
- a DISPLAY-variable is created: DISPLAY=:0

Re: [Solved] Getting xwayland into a working state

Turns out there are "Pure Wayland" instructions in the wiki, but I have no idea how relevant these instructions still are. Might be worth a shot though.

I know, but the information seems a bit outdated. Wayland and weston are already in the repos, mesa and cairo should work already with wayland.

By the way, i forgot to describe my problem in my previous post: Wayland/weston itself works, weston-launch does not make any problems. My problem ist, that i can't use the xwayland-plugin for weston. It's loaded (look at the log output) but the created xserver crashes too fast (whatever that means). The X.org-log tells me that it failed to activate core devices.

The error-message of programs look like this:

$ gnome-terminal
** (gnome-terminal:3355): WARNING **: Could not open X display
Failed to parse arguments: Cannot open display:

From what i understand xwayland.so tries to open a xserver but then the server crashes. As a result, the programs can't open X display, because there's nothing open.

Still trying to figure out how this should work.

The xwayland page says:

Without this you will get the error "XKB: Failed to compile keymap".

    mkdir -p $WLD/share/X11/xkb/rules
    ln -s /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev $WLD/share/X11/xkb/rules/
    ln -s /usr/bin/xkbcomp $WLD/bin/

I installed wayland from extra an weston from community repository, so both files are already in place and i don't need to link them in another directory. Or am I missing something?

EDIT: In one of my previous posts the error log says "Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so [...]" and guess what: libglx.so is linked to libglx.xorg, but there does not exist any libglx.xorg in my filesystem. Hm...

Re: [Solved] Getting xwayland into a working state

That's provided by the xorg-server package.

I guess the question now is, do you just need that one file, or everything that the package provides?

Yep, that's the question. I'll try to find out tomorrow.

Re: [Solved] Getting xwayland into a working state

Another day, another try (and many many fails...)

Just kidding, everything went fine. I downloaded xorg-server via pacman -Sw xorg-server , copied it from /usr/cache/pacman/pkg into my homedirectory and extracted libglx.xorg into /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/

It worked, but only with root-permissions, otherwise the xserver could not be started. That's a real problem if you try to use xwayland as a normal user.

Unfortunately xwayland is not really useable. Not every application works and even simple things like gnome-calculator don't work well.

Xwayland just got a huge update to Xorg 1.14 have you given it a try?

I am interested in wayland, too. I still wait gnome 3.10 to release for a working gnome-shell under wayland.

Maybe it's just a week far.

I'm told that the xwayland-modified ATI driver won't work with Xorg 1.14, which makes sense as it's over a year since it's been rebased. The developer is an Canonical employee and the xmir driver in the same repo is getting worked on, so I'm kind of doubting that he will be the one to update it.

Gnome 3.10 is in gnome-unstable now. I updated everything today but can't get it to work on a wayland only system. And xwayland seems broken at the moment (well, for me with my ati gpu).
