shairport not releasing audio

Hello,

I am having an issue where Shairport does not release audio once I have stopped streaming to it via airplay (mainly from itunes).  I attempt to watch a video via VLC or XBMC, and I am greeted with the following error, "this program does not have permissions to access the audio device".  I have tried stopping the shairport service via systemd, but this does not help.  Only way I have found to restore audio to VLC is through a restart.

Any thoughts or suggestions?  All help is welcome.

If you are using alsa why dont you configure it to mix sound.
