X won't start with Intel Drivers (4600HD)

So my laptop has an i7 4700mq which has an Intel 4600 HD graphics along with the GTX 765M. Originally I tried to get optimus working with bumblebee, but I was running into a lot of lag when resizing and moving windows and decided to settle with just the Intel drivers until things work more smoothly in the Optimus department. I followed the directions on the Intel wiki page but when I run "startx" the console returns some text about reading the config from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and simply stops there.

The wiki page didn't mention anything about needing nvidia drivers for optimus set ups and I made sure to remove xorg.conf and all the other old driver stuff. Can anyone please help me with this, I've been pulling my hair out trying to get the graphics to behave whereas on my old laptop everything ran perfectly.

Re: X won't start with Intel Drivers (4600HD)

Could you please post what your console say when you run startx ? Also posting your ".xsession-errors" could be usefull.

On my computer, X doesn't start if I only install intel driver, it seems completely lost until I install bumblebee and bbswitch to disable the nvidia card.

Whats more, if bumblebee was correctly installed and configured, your lag problems came not from it but most probably from the intel driver.
Have you tried switching between SNA and UXA at the time, to see if there were difference in performance ? On my machine, SNA was awful in the past, and work correctly now with the last drivers.

Wow, you were completely right, I reinstalled the bumblebee and Nvidia drivers and switched to UXA. I wasn't that willing to do so earlier since SNA was suppossed to be faster and newer, but it seems to be an improvement as I no longer get that lag when moving windows around.

The only issue I have now is still the vertical tearing when moving windows around and resizing them. I tried using compton with

compton -b --backend glx --vsync opengl-swc

and any variations of this, but everytime it was enabled resizing iwndows would slow to a crawl and moving them would become noticeably slower. I'm using i3 wm btw.

Thank you so much for the help so far!
