Only Mono playback channels available with ALSA

Hello World

I'm trying out arch for the first time, on a new machine (ie, I havent used this machine with another OS before). It's a Thinkpad T400.

Looking at the output from amixer, I see that ALSA shows master with only Mono channels. I think the sound card should provide stereo,
but I'm not completely sure. Any pointers as to what I should look at and how to fix this would be much appreciated.

I did find a few other threads with a similar problem, but none seemed to fix my issue.
