No Nvidia Sound Device for HDMI Audio

Greetings,

I've been trying with no luck to get audio to send over the HDMI output. I have an Nvidia 650m for the HDMI out. This is an Optimus setup if that matters at all. Most of what I've found suggest there should be an HDMI audio device. However, all I see is the Intel audio device.

$ sudo aplay -L
null
    Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
pulse
    PulseAudio Sound Server
default
    Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)
sysdefault:CARD=PCH
    HDA Intel PCH, ALC663 Analog
    Default Audio Device
front:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, ALC663 Analog
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, ALC663 Analog
    4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, ALC663 Analog
    4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, ALC663 Analog
    5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, ALC663 Analog
    5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, ALC663 Analog
    7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
iec958:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, ALC663 Digital
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output

Does anyone have any insight on this? Many thanks.

Re: No Nvidia Sound Device for HDMI Audio

I have the same issue, with the same nvidia card.

The hdmi audio device does not show up in lscpi either:

Re: No Nvidia Sound Device for HDMI Audio

I hate to start open an old thread, but the same problem happens here. If i choose "Optimus" option in the bios, i have this problem above. If i choose "Discrete" in the bios and reboot, lspci will show the intel and nvidia audio devices.

Under discrete, audio over hdmi works great since lspci shows the device, but under optimus, it does not. Any help appreciated. This seems like a bug in linux considering it audio works in windows with the same setup.

Re: No Nvidia Sound Device for HDMI Audio

Just to shed some more light on this situation ..

I fired up windows in optimus mode, and noticed that in using the windows port of lspci, the device did not show either:

Now, I started to wonder how windows can operate, so i started by plugging in hdmi to the tv and mirrored my screen. After, something interesting happened:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family DRAM Controller (rev 09)

0e:00.0 USB controller: NEC Corporation uPD720200 USB 3.0 Host Controller (rev 04)

The device popped up in the second lscpi, after the hdmi hookup. This probably means that the nvidia driver is enabling / disabling this as it is with the gpu (maybte power?)

Would be nice to have bumblebee support this, but for now looking into this further to see how i can enable it in linux as windows does it.

Re: No Nvidia Sound Device for HDMI Audio

In order for you to get sound out via HDMI, the NVIDIA drivers have to be loaded/installed. It won't see it any other way. So first step would be to make sure you have the proper Nvidia drivers installed.

I'm trying to get a better workaround myself, but for now, if I manually comment/uncomment the default output in my .asoundrc I can get sound out via HDMI.

aplay -l

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 1: ALC892 Digital [ALC892 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

.asoundrc

pcm.!default {
	type hw
	card 1
	device 3
}
pcm.!surround51 {
	type vdownmix
	slave.pcm "default"
}
pcm.!surround40 {
	type vdownmix
	slave.pcm "default"
}

If I reboot with the default in my .asoundrc it crashes ALSA and I get no sound at all. If I comment out the default and reboot all is well and I can uncomment it and have sound out via HDMI. As far as I can tell its something quirky with the way/order the Nvidia drivers load with ALSA. Haven't had time to do much more investigation other than that.

Its not pretty, but it works for now. Hopefully this helps some.
