Overhead from multiple filesystem journals?

Using separate partitions for certain system directories is often considered good practice. However, I'm wondering if the write overhead from having multiple filesystem journals can cause noticeable performance reduction; especially if most of the partitions are on the same drive.

Is there any sort of general consensus on the performance impact of using multiple partitions with journaling filesystems?
