Changing (upgrading) video card ATI-->Nvidia ---SOLVED!!!

I am currently using an ATI Radeon 9000 video card and it has served me well for what I needed from it, however, I just got a new Nvidia GeForce FX5600 card and its sitting here waiting to get revved up. I was about to shut off my machine and swap out the cards but then that little voice had to speak up and made me think "is there anything I should do before I swap them out to avoid problems after I swap them?

Any advice?

Re: Changing (upgrading) video card ATI-->Nvidia ---SOLVED!!!

well, first try to find someone to buy your old card because you'll never go back to ati.......

big_smile

if you wanted to download the nvidia drivers before swapping the cards.... or setup your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 before hand.....

i always tend to learn those things the hard way.  (in other i never ask the question you asked.  good for you!!!)

Re: Changing (upgrading) video card ATI-->Nvidia ---SOLVED!!!

New problem...

I swapped out my ATI 9000 for my new Geforce FX5600 and recompiled my kernel for Nvidia support and removed the ATI support, took out DRM from the kernel and edited my XF86Config file to show the nvidia card with the "nv" driver. I was able to get everything up and running just fine, so I decided to install the nvidia drivers.

The driver installation went without a hitch, it compiled the module and didn't indicate any errors. I then edited my XF86Config file to show driver "nvidia". When I startx it goes to a screen that has a bunch of funny looking letters that look like the letter "u" with a dot in the middle of them and just stays there. I rebooted to text mode and made sure my make.conf file had VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia" in it and I still get the same thing (funny looking letter "u" all over the screen). I booted into my partition with Fedora Core on it and Kudzuu (hardware detection) removed the radeon driver and installed the nvidia card with no problem and I was able to install the Nvidia drivers successfully and they work in Fedora.

I'm not sure where else to look, any help is appreciated.

You didn't state if you had uncommented glx in your XF86config file. This might be the culprit.  wink

Yeah, I did uncomment the Load glx line in XF86Config and commented out the line Load Dri.

According to the Nvidia sites README file this is what I was supposed to do, or I read it wrong.

@ rberry88

I saw a note at www.minion.de that stated you might get ASCII garbage and would need to add a line to your XF86config for (Option "NvAgp" "1".  Not sure if that is what you are getting or not but you can try that FWIW. That site has quite a bit of info about Nvidia cards and fixes to problems associated with them. HTH

Yep, that solved it.  I wasn't sure if my card was bad or what but after the drivers worked fine in Fedora I figured it was something else but this addition (Option "NvAgp" "1") cleared up the problem. Now I get the Nvidia splash screen and all is good.

Thanks for the help.

  EDIT
Well that was fun while it lasted. I shutdown my computer before we left and after I came back and turned the computer on it booted up to that same ASCII junk/garbage on the screen. I checked out the XF86Config and it was the same as it was before and I did a modprobe nvidia and it said it was loaded but with warnings and that the kernel was tainted. I'm not sure what to try next, and don't know what caused it to stop working. I looked at the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file and all the lines have a (II) next to them, no (EE) or (WW) and at the end it says AGP 8 X initialized (or close) and 1024x768 resolution initialized successfully.

I've been searching and besides that blurb from www.minion.de site I haven't found any other resolutions to this situation.

Re: Changing (upgrading) video card ATI-->Nvidia ---SOLVED!!!

Are you loading the driver "nvidia" from  rc.conf in the modules section? Looks like it is loaded but you have an error in your log stating it wasn't loaded (EE). Did you do a depmod -a after all the changes? Not sure I'm on the right track here, just trying to go thru all the steps and validate as I go.  Another question, since you have a 5600 card, it looks like it is using only 16MB of video ram & I think you probably have 128MB. This should be modified in the XF86config file. I may be misconstrueing some of this since it was such a long file but those seem to pop out the most. I'll keep checking.

Re: Changing (upgrading) video card ATI-->Nvidia ---SOLVED!!!

I see your xf86config has 256MB of Ram but I thought your log showed trying to use 16MB and EE error was for GLX not nvidia, my fault. It's like it is halfway being used. Also, what is the line in your config "Option DPMS" + no value for? I haven't seen that anywhere and am curious about what it does.

Re: Changing (upgrading) video card ATI-->Nvidia ---SOLVED!!!

I have "nvidia" in the modules list in rc.conf. The line Options "DPMS" as shown, I got from the forums over at Nvidia's website, the explanation was that if you were using an LCD monitor (I am) that you need that line, the meaning I'm not sure but I've tried it with and without and it doesn't seem to change anything.

My clock speed for a 256MB Ram videocard is right in my XF86Config file at 261224(?) but the problem with GLX not being loaded is what I am suspecting is keeping the X server from recognizing any more than 16 MB.

If I can't figure this out in the next day or so I'm just going to do a fresh install and see if that makes a difference, I'm wondering if there are any remnants of the ATI drivers still hanging around.

Re: Changing (upgrading) video card ATI-->Nvidia ---SOLVED!!!

Problem solved!!!

I did a fresh install and got X up and running with KDE and downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers.

I installed them per the README and they indicated a successful install, I changed the driver in XF86Config from "nv" to "nvidia" and when I typed "startx" I got the screen with the funny ASCII garbage. I then went into XF86Config and inserted the line "Option" NvAgp" "1" and typed "startx" again and, wait for it, I get the wonderful Nvidia splash screen. I ran glxgears and got over 2500 fps on a small window and about 320 fps on full screen. Now it was time for the real test --- Rebooting. I rebooted into a text prompt and typed "startx" and was met wtih that wonderful Nvidia splash screen. Thank goodness for happy endings.

Now I'm going to start from scratch and re-install all 8 distributions that are currently installed and see what kind of fun I can have getting kernel 2.6.1 and the Nvidia drivers working in each and every install.  lol  8)  8)  8)  lol  lol
