Ralink RT2870/RT3070 Wireless adapter module

Hi,
I've bought lastly a cheap wireless adapter, lsusb;

 Bus 001 Device 003: ID 148f:3070 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2870/RT3070 Wireless Adapter

This adapter doesn't work out of the box. I had to blacklist rt2800usb module and install rt5370 module (from aur: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/rt5370/ )

Why this module isn't included into kernel or in official pacman repository? The comment in aut claims that this module is no longer necessary but like I've checked it isn't true.

Apologies for a bump. I've got a similar usb (was cheap, now I see why!) and, even though I have been a linux hobbyist for a few years now I still cannot work out what to do to get the thing working.
lsusb shows the device
what do now?

I have three cheapo USB WiFi dongles like this. But they all register as RT5370. From what I understand, the RT3070 is closely related to the RT5370, but I am not sure what driver you are supposed to use on it specifically.

When in doubt, get the sourced from the manufacturer. The Ralink stuff is now hosted on the MediaTek web site (maybe they were bought out… dunno). Here is a direct link to all the Linux module and firmware sources.

You can't rally expect anyone to actually be able to help you from that amount of info? What does stuck mean? What have you tried?

Ha yeah fair one. Ok so, I've pretty much done what the guys with the Asus USB-N66 have done. I've got my system to the point of make install but I get this error:

So you followed the info in that link… but you don't actually have an RT3573. You have an RT3070, so does that modification to the code even apply to what you are doing? You need to also check to see if there is actually a /path/to/build/dir/rt5572sta.ko in that directory. But it would seem to me that again, if your hw is an rt3070, then the rt5572 driver is giong to do you exactly zero good.

Also, yes you might be right about the driver too... however, when checking the link you gave to the mediatek page there are two drivers mentioning RT3572 as per the output of lsusb:

 Bus 008 Device 002: ID 0b05:179d ASUSTek Computer, Inc. USB-N53 802.11abgn Network Adapter [Ralink RT3572]

so I took the latest one. I just realised that the driver needed for this particular usb stick wasn't specified by myself, I pasted the older stick's lsusb output so apologies for that.

So here's the rub. Would you or anyone else be able to write instructions for someone of my level of understanding (low but willing) in order to get this damn thing working? I'd rather not have to use ubuntu....

Now your posts to the threads were a bit confusing, particularly since those usb thingies are all different.
Anyway, now that PCI-ID 0b05:179d of your dongle is listed for the mainline kernel rt2800usb:

$ modinfo rt2800usb |grep v0B05p1790d
alias:          usb:v0B05p1790d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip*in*

First you should try to modprobe that and see, if a wireless interface appears.

If not, you are up to the compiling part. For that I guess you downloaded http://www.mediatek.com/_en/07_download … hp?sn=5032
I can only guess that because you don't name what you downloaded. To get it to work, the first thing I would do is download a goodlooking similar AUR PKG, e.g. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/rt/rt3573/PKGBUILD
(or another, I have not tried any of them)

Then modify it, so it uses your downloaded driver and its md5-sum, which you placed in the same directory.
Next, give it a try with "makepkg" again. All the other steps in the bbs-thread for the N750 might not be necessary, if the proprietary driver has your device's PCI ID already. Maybe the other patches in the PKGBUILD create problems though - but give it a go first. If you are lucky and it compiles, creating a package, make sure the "rt2800usb" is not loaded anymore before you try it.

Well, this is the strangest thing, or not as the case may be... After your reply, Strike0, I went ahead and started searching for how to modprobe correctly and ended up just doing the Beginner's Wireless Setup as per the wiki again. And this time it worked, and there was much rejoicing. I've even got NetworkManager working, to an extent.

However, another problem has arisen, namely that now the wireless usb is working and connecting, the ethernet isn't. I know, this shouldn't be a big problem but I prefer to use the ethernet and was really just looking to get the usb working for an old Arch laptop...

Any ideas on what might be the problem? And if more info is needed then what do you need me to input?

Now that's good, you are getting forward!

But with the info you give, I don't know about your new problem. What I do know though is that it will be unrelated to your wireless.
You should follow the Beginner's guide for wired setup and networkmanager for that. If that leads you to the network troubleshooting page and you cannot solve it yourself given the hints and tricks in that, you will at least gather the info needed. With that you should start a new thread explaining the problem and what you tried to solve it .. this one is the wrong place for it.
