ArchLinux freeze randomly

Hello,
First, sorry for my bad english.
I'm new on Archlinux, and I got a problem :
I've Arch with KDE, and sometimes (seemingly randomly), the PC freeze and the sound loop, like if the CPU was at 100%.
I can't do anything but reset the computer.
There isn't any problem with Windows, so I don't think it's an hardware problem.
I got a Sapphire 7870 and a 2500k CPU. What can I do ?
Thanks !

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

Anything interesting in the logs?
When it locks up, can you switch to tty (Ctrl-Alt-F1 / F2)? Does REISUB https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … uts#Kernel work?

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

Hello.

Try posting your system specs, like

uname -a

I found out it was the latest kernel and/or the latest nvidia driver.

Downgraded them and I've been fine.

Wish I could help more but I'm sure there are some great people here with more understanding of Arch.

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

When it locks up, once, i was able to switch to TTY, But I did not do anything because the PC was too slow, I could not even login me.
I don't know where I can find logs that will help me (like crash log, ...)
I'll enable REISUB and try it, thanks

Edit: I'm not on my computer right now, i'll post the result of "uname -a" tomorrow, thanks

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

@perdouille could well be the video software youre using if youre using catalyst it may need tweaking
if youre using the open source driver like me and you made a config file ie; 20-radeon.conf  try renaming it
or nukeing it and see wot happens....I had the problem too....gOOd LuK

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

This may be unrelated to Radeon graphics; I also get random freezes with linux 3.10.5 on a Sandy Bridge system with integrated Intel GPU. I upgraded from 3.9.9 recently. Note that perdouille has a Sandy Bridge based system as well.

The latest kernel 3.10.5 finally fixed some long standing issues with Intel GPU power states. After the update I noticed random lockups (one during video playback, one during text editing). I am not using any 3D acceleration (compositing, etc.). The crashes appear to be hard, since magic sysrq sequences have no effect. I suspect something is not quite right with the GPU power management code.

I don't see any reports of this issue at the moment, but I may file a bug report (albeit with little information).

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

The same started happening over here. On a lenovo p400 with ivy bridge, intel GPU, arch x64 w/ gnome 3.8. The pointer doesn't freeze but all else does. Didn't start doing it until I installed updates last night...

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

Ok, after lots of testing i found out it's the wifi hardwareswitch on a Acer 1410 netbook.
Turning off the wifi via the hardware switch = no more freeze!
So it's seems related to the driver / software / hardware wifi on my netbook.

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

Hi,
since few weeks my system also freezes, but in my case probably due to cache problems (HD led remains on for 10-15 minutes before I'm able to get complete control, but  it can be easily loss it again).  This occurs after 1-2 days of operation (usually my notbook is always on). After the notebook is switched off, then on again ,everything go smoothly for about one day, or more. I don't know if this is important, my HD is a solid state HD (128GB). Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

This exact same problem is happening to me too, and I have no idea why. I found nothing relevant in any logfiles, and I am unable to access a TTY or do anything other than a hard reset. If any sound is playing, it will loop the last second or so, and a couple seconds later it locks up. This happens when I'm not on the computer as well. One thing that seems to make it happen more often is mining Primecoins (like bitcoin), but it's happened while doing other things as well (but much less common). I don't think it's hardware related, as I haven't once had it do this in Windows, and I've done primecoin mining and games and stuff in there plenty as well.

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

My laptop is DELL e5520, but some months ago  i replaced the original HD with a solidstate 128GB (should be OCZ or something similar). By the way,  the problem arised a couple of months ago, while I installed SSD 6-7 months ago or more. In my case I'm leaving the laptop to complete its job (HD light goes off) this takes 10-20 minutes sad, then some times I continue to use the pc, but I prefer to switch off to reset and restart.  If I don't fail this strange behaviour is connected with the use of OKULAR, so probably some strange things occur due to some libraries.
Any help?

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

I had the same problem because of zramswap.
I disabled the service via systemctl and removed it from my system. No problems since then.

Similarly, mine freezes as well, quite often.  Sound stops, I cannot change tty, mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. What logs should I be looking at?

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

Same problem here. I have a thinkpad t420 and I think it started freezing randomly after a kernel update, but I'm not so sure about that either. I have no clue what could be causing this. At the beginning I thought it could be pulseaudio so I uninstalled it but that didn't help. I use xmonad and normally have very few programs open (screen, klipper, wicd, emacs and chromium). Does anyone know what logs to look at to see what could have gone wrong? When I hard-reboot the logs are empty

I had the same problem sometimes when launching google-chrome.
Disabling zramswap resolved this issue.

I also don't have zramswap installed, and it still freezes on occasion. I also tried switching to Xfce and nothing changed.

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

I am in the habit of nukeing my cache and rebuilding it after any and particularly big upgrades...maybe it'll help.

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

I have this problem too. The last hard lock happened about two minutes after I booted my computer and the one before that took five days to strike. It seems fairly random, but the time frame for me is generally within 1-5 days. Stability doesn't seem to be a factor as I've run Prime95 for several hours without issue and have previously run memtest86+ for many hours as well.

I'm not entirely sure when I started to get these hard locks, but it's been happening for at least 2-3 months. And it's definitely a hard lock because the magic SysRq key doesn't work. My latest attempt to diagnose it has been to disable the bluetooth.service, and so far it has been 1d 11h...

I also have a soft lock issue (the magic SysRq key works in this case) when I exit i3 sometimes (around a 30% chance it'll happen), which might be related. I've managed to get a log in these cases, and two are posted below:

I'm hesitant to file any bug reports as kernel related issues are above my understanding and I don't want to waste anyone's time with what are most likely local issues.

tl;dr: I get both hard locks and soft locks, which are seemingly separate issues. I posted two of the kernel oops for the soft locks above.

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

Hello!
Upgrading to 3.11.1 solved freezes with intel hd graphics on my notebook - Asus x401a[celeron version].
Currently using linux-pf.
