I bought a new Dell XPS 14. This model only has an Intel HD 4000 graphics chip. This is currently a UEFI system, as I would like to try and keep the Win8 installation it came with intact if possible.
I dd'ed the latest Archiso image (2013-09) to a USB stick and rebooted. When booting I press F12 to go to the BIOS Boot Option menu and the USB drive is listed. When I select that I get the initial Archiso boot menu asking if I want to boot the image or enter the UEFI shell etc. When I select to boot the image the screen goes blank and it seems like there is no further activity. I initially thought it was an issue with the video as listen here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … t_problems but I tried every option and the results are the same. If I pressed the power button the machine shuts down immediately so it seems like nothing has booted from the USB drive at all.
I burnt an Ubuntu image to the USB drive and that booted to desktop with no problem.
There seem to threads with similar issues but no definite solution.
I also tried to select the UEFI shell but for both option v1/v2 I got an error message displayed. Not sure if that's indicative of something wrong.

I switched my BIOS to legacy and it booted the archiso image. Would prefer to keep it UEFI to keep the Windows 8 installation.

Did you follow the wiki instructions for correctly preparing a UEFI bootable image?

I was under the impression that the image was now unified and no further steps were needed? I guess I was incorrect...

I followed the instructions in the wiki to create a UEFI bootable USB image and the same thing occurs.

If I boot archiso in legacy mode but install the system as if it was UEFI can I then switch back to booting in UEFI mode afterwards?

No, you need to boot in UEFI mode (or, if your BIOS supports it, compatability mode) to do a UEFI install.
You have disabled secure boot, right?

Secure Boot is disabled.
I found a thread on the archbang site where someone is having the same issue with the same laptop. He said previous versions of archiso worked. I downloaded the 201308 dual iso and it booted in UEFI mode!

Nice. Please remember to mark your thread as [Solved] by editing your first post and prepending it to the title...

Should I file a bug report about this?
