External monitor logs me out.

Hi everyone, this is my first post and my first topic on this forum!

I use Dell Latitude D420 laptop with external NEC 18" monitor (resolution 1280x1024). Whenever I plug in the external monitor, system detects it, but turns very very slow, and after 1 minute it asks me to logout. If I plug the monitor off, within 30 seconds , everything goes back normal with the system. My xandr output is:

 Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 32767 x 32767
LVDS1 connected primary 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 261mm x 163mm
   1280x800       59.9*+
   1024x768       60.0  
   800x600        60.3     56.2  
   640x480        59.9  
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
TV1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Note: This is the output without plugged monitor! When it's plugged in, it says on te VGA1 line that the resolution is 1280x1024.

Welcome to Arch Linux.  For the life of me, I cannot think of what desktop environment would ask you to log out. 

Could you provide more information, such as:
Which Desktop Environment are you using ?  (Gnome, KDE, Xfce4, i3, LXDM, OpenBox)
What is your video chipset?
How much memory does your system have?
When you connect the external monitor, do you have to take any steps to enable it?  What, specifically, do you do?

Oh, thank you for your reply. I use Gnome desktop, my graphic card is integrated Intel 945GM, and my system has 2GB DDR2 RAM memory. When the monitor is connected, it appears to behave like extended desktop (no deskbar and icons , just empty space to drag windows in), but after 60 seconds or, less - everything brakes and an icon, similar to crash icon in google chrome (dead folder) appears with white background and logout button.

Have you any environment besides Gnome you can use for a test environment?  You probably have twm installed; depending on how you start your X session, it might be easy to use for experiments.  I suggest this because Gnome tries to (IMHO) "help" just a bit too much.   Also, I hate to say it, but 2G of RAM might be a little thin for a 2 monitor environment -- especially with a full featured desktop environment like Gnome.

Thanks, you were right. Now I use xfce and everything is fine. But, well, I don't know.. everything with external monitor and gnome was fine when I was using Debian and openSUSE, it must be some simple stuff. Xfce is great. Thanks again!
