I recently switched from using an actual monitor to a TV. (This is a temporary situation and I will be switching back in a couple days. I would still like to know what is going on.) On certain applications, the font size is tiny, so small that it is completely unreadable. You actually might not even notice it if you didn't know it was supposed to be there. The containers that the text is in appear unaffected. The screen resolution is normal. I can even change it to 800x600 without it getting bigger. I use xmonad as my window manager (I do not have a desktop environment).
Affected applications:
XDM
Thunderbird (just the UI, the actual message text is fine)
Firefox (just the UI, the actual web pages are fine)
Trayer
Dzen2
nvidia-settings
pavucontrol
Unaffected applications:
xterm
xmonad
libreoffice

See if messing with the font DPI helps.

I thought it was something like that, I just couldn't remember what anything was called. I'll look at that link when I get the chance.
