Kernel 3.11.1-1 update, nvidia-304.108-5 update, startx doesn't start

After the upgrade from Linux 3.10.10-1 to 3.11.1-1 (today's update to 3.11.1-2 didn't change anything) and nvidia-304xx from 304.108-3 to 304.108-5, startx won't start. It hangs at "Loading extension GLX" and then terminates.  It gives me that black flash like it usually does when openbox starts then goes right back to the usual printout that shows "Loading extension GLX" then just gives me the termination message like you see in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

I had been running dual monitors nicely until these two updates.  I thought maybe it was the dual monitor setup so I unplugged the second monitor from my computer, renamed my xorg.conf, but the same thing happened.  If I downgrade both the kernel and the drivers, it all works again, both with dual monitors and single monitor.  I've seen mention of some troubles on the nvidia forums but nothing for 304xx.

I tried running nvidia-xconfig both as root and as user before running startx as well.  That didn't help me, either.

Graphics card is Nvidia Quadro FX 4000

I'm happy to post anything else that is relevant.  I'm at a loss.

Re: Kernel 3.11.1-1 update, nvidia-304.108-5 update, startx doesn't start

In your dmesg appears the following:

[ 110.659286] NVRM: Your system is not currently configured to drive a VGA console
[ 110.659294] NVRM: on the primary VGA device. The NVIDIA Linux graphics driver
[ 110.659298] NVRM: requires the use of a text-mode VGA console. Use of other console
[ 110.659301] NVRM: drivers including, but not limited to, vesafb, may result in
[ 110.659305] NVRM: corruption and stability problems, and is not supported.

Do you have any other video drivers installed that may be conflicting with the nvidia driver?

 # pacman -Qs xf86-video

If not, try removing your nvidia xorg config and rebooting to a default set-up. It could be one of the settings in the xorg config.

# mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf /path_to_back_up_your_config

Cheers.

Re: Kernel 3.11.1-1 update, nvidia-304.108-5 update, startx doesn't start

@Padfoot:
Thank you for your help!

[sb@zpro ~]$ sudo pacman -Qs xf86-video
[sudo] password for sb:
[sb@zpro ~]$

As to the xorg.conf, I only had the xorg.conf I created with nvidia-settings (with a few manual additions to stop the screen from blanking) to run dual monitors, /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but I already did try removing it.  I still got the same xorg errors. However, I don't have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20--nvidia.conf file.  I only have 10-evdev.conf and 10-quirks.conf in xorg.conf.d.

I noticed that VGA console message too, and I have always had it, as I noticed it when I was tinkering setting up the dual monitors, but as everything always ran, I didn't worry about it.

try to ensure that nouveau is blacklisted. add

"rdblacklist=nouveau" at grub/syslinux, on kernel parameters (I put after "quiet")

Thank you for the suggestion but no change when I did that.  Just to confirm I did it correctly, I edited /etc/default/grub and added rdblacklist=nouveau between the quotes at GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="" and then ran sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

I did notice something odd, odd for me anyway, that my kernel parameter is rw, not ro.  This seems new, I never saw it not ro before.  I have no idea if this would have anything to do with this problem, however.
