Hello everyone,
I installed Arch Linux last week so I am still very new. I switched over from Mac OS X and would like to import my music collection into Rhythmbox.
This is what works so far:
(1) Arch automatically picks up my external HD with the Apple file system.
(2) In Gnome's Files, I can nicely copy the music files.
(3) VLC plays my mp3 music from the external drive with now problem at all.
(4) Audacious is playing the mp3 files, too. (I first searched the forum and found this thread, so it looks like gstreamer can be ruled out, too. I also installed the gst-plugins-ugly package with pacman, just to be sure I don't miss any gstreamer relevant packages)
These are my problems:
- when I use the Rhythmbox menu to add music to the library and point it to the relevant path on my external HD, it extensively searches the HD, but only adds a WAV file that happens to be on the HD. Any proprietary file format gets ignored and doesn't show in the search results.
- consequently, I can play the WAV file in Rhythmbox, but nothing else.
- when I click to Edit/Preferences/Music and look at the Preferred Format (e.g. MP3), Rhythmbox says
Install additional software required to use this format.
I am really at a loss now what additional plugins Rhythmbox could possibly need, especially since Audacious is nicely working. Currently my best guess is that I have everything I need, but Rhythmbox needs to be configured in a way so it knows it's there?
Either way, any help is welcome.

Update:
When I use simple drag and drop to add an mp3 file, the following error report appears:
Additional GStreamer plugins are required to play this file: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) decoder
And this is what my pacman says:

Aye, problem solved, this did the trick. It seems like Rhythmbox needs the outdated ugly codices?

This is exactly the problem I had and your solution solved it! Thanks!

Installing gstreamer0.10-ugly-plugins didn't do the trick for me, I had to install gst-plugins-ugly.

You should pay more attention to optional dependencies printed out by pacman during the package installation and update or just check the info online https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr … rhythmbox/ instead of bumping an old thread.
