I have a usb hard drive with a usb id of 040d:6204. The brand name on the case says "Rocketfish," and lsusb refers to it as "VIA Technologies, Inc." The strangest thing is that my desktop computer does not recognize it, but my laptop does. The only packages on my laptop that are extra are various laptop things, such as laptop-mode-tools. Does anyone have ideas on what is needed to make it work on my desktop?

So when you plug it in to your desktop by "does not recognize it" you mean it doesn't show up in dmesg, or it doesn't appear in your file manager?

It shows up in dmesg, but it does not show up in /dev. (I do not use a file manager, just the terminal). When verifying this, I discovered that it shows up when plugged into the back panel, but not the front. It also appears that one of my back panel USB ports may be finicky. It seems funny that I never tried it in the back panel before, but I guess I must not have.

It's a power issue. A longshot possibility is the ignore_oc parameter for the uhci_hcd and ehci_hcd modules. But it's better to just avoid plugging it into hubs.

I'm just going to always plug it into the back. I didn't know that my front ports didn't give as much power or even think to check. What does that parameter do?

What does that parameter do?

Is there a chance you have upgraded the kernel on the desktop without having rebooted? Compare the versions reported by uname -a and pacman -Qi linux
edit: Never mind. I missed that it was marked solved. Does it work from the rear connectors?

Yes, the back panel is fine. The front panel doesn't work. I don't have USB hubs to try it with.
