[SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

It's unbelivable but it's true !! sometimes when searching for big issue you forget the small one. The issue was caused by openbox hmm , a soon as I changed to a DE everything worked.

After the upgrade , X is not starting anymore (or it started just sometimes) and no matter what I try (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_Graphics) it makes no difference.

I tried with sna, uxa, no acceleration at all, adding to the boot i915.semaphores=1 etc, etc but yet nothing to do.
If I kill openbox session and X and than try switching from the ttys the screen is stuck on the tty which I'm working on [yes you get it right, somehow the monitor is stuck so basically no more graphics probably to the driver]

It was working normally before the upgrade, the difference which I notice during "startx" is "Loadin GLX Extentions" which appeared after the upgrade, and I can say that it's starts more with SNA acceleration that without acceleration at all.

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

The issue is introduced with the driver, I need an old xf86-video-intel (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-9 … 35f3ddcf3c) to download and install as when I tested with "nomodeset" it didn't even detect my current VGA , as arm.konicchi or whatever is not anymore "alive" I don't know where to get these packages anymore

now after the monitor not starting (at all) and the wireless not working (at all) I hope with the next update ill remain at least the keyboard!

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

In terms of downgrading xf86-video-intel, you probably don't need to download it, look in /var/cache/pacman/pkg for an older version of the package and install it using:

pacman -U

Failing that, check out the following wiki page for details on how to find an older version.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … g_Packages

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

Hello CH2IS,

thanks for your advice but I removed /var/cache/pacman/pkg while I was following this advice : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xo … ion_failed   (just doing a reasearch for the AIGLX switch) and there is no more such option as "downgrading packages" after https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … ck_Machine has closed, and the replacement I think is still in sync and don't have the packages sad .

Thanks anyway.

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

Missed that bit of news about the ARM! I've just checked using the downgrade package from the AUR and there's a slightly older version (xf86-video-intel-2.21.14-2) available from the new ARM but I suppose it depends on when you updated and what version you were using.

Edit: corrected link.

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

Yes, actually I already tried that version, but I think I must downgrade to an older version (and dif it won't work will start downgrading Xorg), and currently I'm looking also for kernel 3.10.5-1 due to broadcom wireless bug...

Thinking about the workaround which happened as a miracle , I'm pretty sure that X crashes badly (I have no dmesg log, nor any error) because it doesn't say "X is already running" but to debug that it's a bit gdb-users stuff.

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

GLX is part of the mesa package so I'd suggest trying to downgrade that and mesa-libgl first in order to get X starting. Another option could be to use one of the out of sync mirrors or, according to the wiki page, to compile the packages using the ABS and an old PKGBUILD. I can't say I've ever tried the latter though.

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

I'm reviewing my pacman logs and the mesa upgrade is like 20 days ago :

[2013-08-05 07:27] [PACMAN] upgraded mesa (9.1.5-1 -> 9.1.6-1)
[2013-08-05 07:27] [PACMAN] upgraded mesa-libgl (9.1.5-1 -> 9.1.6-1)
[2013-08-05 07:28] [PACMAN] upgraded lib32-mesa (9.1.5-1 -> 9.1.6-1)
[2013-08-05 07:28] [PACMAN] upgraded lib32-mesa-libgl (9.1.5-1 -> 9.1.6-1)

But looking at xorg-server upgrade is also way back:

[2013-07-15 18:32] [PACMAN] upgraded xorg-server (1.14.1-1 -> 1.14.2-2)
[2013-07-18 16:43] [PACMAN] upgraded xorg-mkfontscale (1.1.0-1 -> 1.1.1-1)
[2013-07-18 16:43] [PACMAN] upgraded xorg-xhost (1.0.5-1 -> 1.0.6-1)
[2013-07-18 16:43] [PACMAN] upgraded xorg-xrandr (1.4.0-1 -> 1.4.1-1)
[2013-07-30 20:06] [PACMAN] upgraded xorg-iceauth (1.0.5-1 -> 1.0.6-1)
[2013-08-12 13:22] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] >>> Add to the device section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
[2013-08-12 13:22] [PACMAN] upgraded xorg-xprop (1.2.1-1 -> 1.2.2-1)
[2013-08-12 13:22] [PACMAN] upgraded xorg-xset (1.2.2-2 -> 1.2.3-1)
[2013-08-24 22:07] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET]     with the following content as /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf :
[2013-08-25 12:01] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] >>> Add to the device section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
[2013-08-25 12:16] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET]     with the following content as /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf :

So the remaining option would be only :

[2013-08-24 22:07] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET]     with the following content as /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf :
[2013-08-24 22:07] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET]         Driver      "intel"
[2013-08-24 22:07] [PACMAN] upgraded xf86-video-intel (2.21.14-2 -> 2.21.15-1)
[2013-08-25 12:01] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -U xf86-video-intel-2.21.14-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz'
[2013-08-25 12:01] [PACMAN] downgraded xf86-video-intel (2.21.15-1 -> 2.21.14-2)
[2013-08-25 12:16] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -S xf86-video-intel'
[2013-08-25 12:16] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET]     with the following content as /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf :
[2013-08-25 12:16] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET]         Driver      "intel"
[2013-08-25 12:16] [PACMAN] upgraded xf86-video-intel (2.21.14-2 -> 2.21.15-1)

But as we can see from the logs I already tried the downgrade to 2.21.14-2 and it didn't work sad

Maybe it has to do somehow with the kernel upgrade?
I'm puzzled hmm

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

Well I think I may have a clue now:

Aug 25 12:28:34 blackbox kernel: [ 0.443845] [drm:drm_pci_agp_init] *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpgart module.
Aug 25 12:28:34 blackbox kernel: [    0.443903] DRM: Fill_in_dev failed.

Didn't find yet a real solution to test.

EDIT: Forget about workarounds, it was only a chance, by switching between tty's and running startx it's the same, but no-wonder-why once in 8 reboots or more it starts x correctly. And about the above error, I saw it just once, maybe it's not the case of this nightmare sad

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

After a long read / search / and testing, DRM debug also included [drm.debug=0xe]

the message:

Aug 25 12:28:34 sys kernel: [ 0.443845] [drm:drm_pci_agp_init] *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpgart module.
Aug 25 12:28:34 sys kernel: [    0.443903] DRM: Fill_in_dev failed.

Is not really relevant , and I can't generate it anymore because it was produced during a test where I used "nomodeset" which is NOT supported and/or "contradicts" DRM.

Some data about VGA status during the problem (i.e, I started X and than nothing happened so I switch tty)

the weird thing here is that I remember my Intel Card showing also the model (if I'm not wrong) not just showing like that

I saw also this strange ACPI conflict log during boot:

I use acpi_call-git from AUR and I use echo '\_SB.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP._OFF' > /proc/acpi/call to disable my ATI card, however after reinstalling and running now, all tests show "failed" just as my VGA would have changed ???

So basically it seems more a DRM issue? http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux … 03723.html

MODULES="i915 intel_agp" currently build with the kernel..

I'm very tired now to keep searching , if someone knows a fix/patch to this let me know as I'm probably going for a kernel recompilation asap.
Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

Bump  , at least somebody could point to old packages... or after ARM is dead we should switch to gentoo??!!

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

Hey, I also get the error (same drive - intel), with x86-64.
Have you temporary solution (which packages to downgrade)?

No there is no temporary solution, the workaround is just don't turn of your laptop because you probably will not get X again.

Just for curiosity, as I'm going to fill a bug report, you probably have 2 GPU's right? (Intel + ATI) , in anycase this has nothing to do with ATI, what you could try is do the following tests :
https://01.org/linuxgraphics/documentat … ort-bugs-0
You can find intel-gpu-tools in AUR also.

If you can add the data here would be great as I can open the bug with data from more machines.

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

Your problem is different, you have an input/output error, check your dmesg.

Re: [SOLVED]X not starting anymore Intel / Loading GLX Extention

If you still care: I had problems running the intel driver on a hybrid Nvidia/Intel-Card after updating. They changed the standard acceleration method for Intel drivers: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ion_method My problem were resolved by setting it back to the old method.

I honestly don't have the time atm to work through all you tried, but maybe it's worth a shot. I had very strange behaviour in my logs and nothing seemed related to the final solution, I just tried and it worked.
