(SOLVED) uefi and laptop freezing

Hi.
I just found the way to install archlinux with uefi (before was installation with uefi OFF in bios) and from the time when UEFI is ON than when I'm coping some files, extracting some files etc my laptop is freezing (looks like cpu is used in 100% and mouse coursor is moving very slowly), before I think was ok... my laptop is lenovo y580. I don't know if that's the uefi problem but looks like that...
dmes shows that error:

[ 0.419211] acpi PNP0A08:00: ACPI _OSC support notification failed, disabling PCIe ASPM
[ 1.497552] ata2.00: failed to enable AA (error_mask=0x1)
[ 1.504183] ata2.00: failed to enable AA (error_mask=0x1)

any ideas what can be the reason ?

Regards,
siamer

Re: (SOLVED) uefi and laptop freezing

I would check your disk with smartctl - not just the health check. Run the available tests, see if errors are logged and look at the individual attributes monitored. (smart often gives "PASSED" even when drives are clearly failing.)

Backup first, though.

Are there any UEFI updates available for your laptop?

Re: (SOLVED) uefi and laptop freezing

Why do you think it is UEFI related?

Re: (SOLVED) uefi and laptop freezing

I just Googled 'Linux "failed to enable AA"' and I got some possibly-relevant hits:

  • This thread (on this very site), which suggests adding boot options of "ide0=noprobe ide1=noprobe", but one reader said this didn't help.

  • This post indicates that the message is harmless.

  • This Fedora Bugzilla entry indicates that the system will sometimes (but not always) freeze after producing the error.

  • This Debian forum post says that the system will hang for a second or two.

There aren't really any resolutions, except possibly for the first one. In any event, this doesn't sound like an EFI issue to me. You could test this by using a BIOS-mode boot loader to boot the computer. You can do this with minimal risk, especially if you install the BIOS-mode boot loader to a USB flash drive or some other such disk. It sounds like you think it's an EFI issue because you re-installed Arch in EFI mode, and your previous BIOS-mode installation didn't have this problem. Unfortunately, re-installing the whole OS means that you changed a lot more than just the boot mode. Even if you re-did the installation procedure very closely, there are likely to be subtle differences in where files reside (which could be an issue if your hard disk has bad sectors or if there's some sort of sensitive timing glitch in the driver), and the versions of packages may differ (which could introduce new bugs).

Re: (SOLVED) uefi and laptop freezing

Pse I don't know, should I check on lenovo website ? uefi update mean bios update ? If yes than there is no new bios for my laptop...

cfr I just installed windows 8 on other hdd and coping, extracting etc without any problems so it have to be releated with "linux" and as I remember with uefi off (before I got it off) was working fine, but maybe i'm wrong, I will check on livecd with uefi off how it's working...

srs5694  my system looks like is habging for second as well so maybe it's releated with that bug...

I'm just upgrading kernel so we will see how it will work..

Regards,
siamer

EDIT

after upgrading kernel arch didn't boot anymore, didn't know how to refresh uefi so reinstall arch with uefi OFF so this time I will be able to test it that was really uefi problem... will let you know soon... without uefi booting faster (is it normal?)...

EDIT2

so problem is SOLVED !! Problem was UEFI... don't understand why, but now without uefi (uefi off in bios) arch is working much faster...

thanks,
siamer
