[SOLVED] Quiet/muffled microphone sound with ALSA

Quick explanation: I'm using Arch Linux with a HDA ATI SB VIA VT1708S soundcard and the microphone is quiet, muffled, and somewhat choppy, even with a dB gain of 0 for digital. I've tried various solutions from these forums and nothing has solved my problem so far. Thanks in advance.

(Here's a screenshot of alsamixer)

Does Auto-Mute apply to playback, capture or both? In my experience sometimes S/PDIF can block certain streams. My Prodigy 7.1 HiFi (ice1724) has CD switched with Line in the driver code, so you should try all sources, maybe they mixed up.

did you try alsamixer?
MM means it is mute, press 'M' to enable it, and press up arrow to turn up.
