How can i change the default bar i have (i believe its named kicker) to something like ksmoothpanel or pypanel? I have no idea how to do this, and have tried looking in the wiki as well as through the KDE Control Center....

Try this:
1) Read /opt/kde/bin/startkde
2) Look in /opt/kde/share/autostart for panel.desktop and move it somewhere else?

I read the file, but it didnt really help me much. As far as panel.desktop goes, mine is not there. I looked in the exact location you specified, but i dont have one....What should i do next?

In startkde:
# * Then ksmserver is started which in turn starts
# 1) the window manager (kwin)
# 2) everything in $KDEDIR/share/autostart (kdesktop, kicker, etc.)
# 3) the rest of the session.
so I looked in that directory and found panel.desktop was responsible for starting kicker.
This morning I tried moving panel.desktop out of that directory, logged out and in again and kicker didn't start. So it works for me (KDE 3.5). I assume I could then go on to create a *.desktop file based on "panel" to start some other program.

alright, i found the panel.desktop....I have edited it so that ksmoothpanel shows up on start as well as pypanel, but when i click the menu button on ksmoothdock, nothing comes up.... Does anyone know what the problem is?
Also, is there a different panel i should use, that would give me the menu function of kicker, but would be a lot less cluttered and better looking?
