No Atheros AR3012 bluetooth device found

i have been up and down the internet looking for a solution to this, and have found many that don't seem to apply.

i have an Acer Aspire S3.  It supposedly comes with the Atheros AR3012 bluetooth chipset.  however, lspci and lsusb do not show anything relating to bluetooth.

i have searched around and found that there is a kernel patch for this chipset.  however, after failing to apply it to a kernel, i looked at the files it was attempting to edit and saw that they already had the information added to them that the patch includes.  upon further googling, i found that this patch was submitted upstream sometime around kernel 2.6, and further investigation indicates that this should have been resolved sometime around kernel 3.2 or 3.4.

people have reported that their problems with this chipset went away when upgrading from previous versions of Ubuntu to 12.04 (if i remember correctly).

my btusb and bluetooth kernel modules are loaded, dbus is running, and systemctl bluetooth.service has been started.  i even played with loading the ath3k module, but that didn't seem to make a difference. hcitool doesn't find any device.  hci tool and blueman have no problems utilizing my Targus USB bluetooth adapter, so i know that i'm not missing anything with other system software that would prevent bluetooth from working.

i have not tried booting into another operating system yet, but all indications are that if i booted from a USB into the latest ubuntu release, my bluetooth would work out of the box.  this will be my next test.  until then, does anyone have any ideas why it doesn't appear to be found?

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas you may have!  this is not an urgent issue, but more along the lines of "my computer has bluetooth and it would be nice to be able to actually use it" thing.

tl;dr : my bluetooth device isn't found, but it probably works in ubuntu.  whycome?

P.S. other than this, and needing to add a couple boot flags in my kernel parameters, this laptop runs arch like a champ! i highly recommend it, and since it is a couple years old it can be had for a song on amazon et al.
