I have an Acer Aspire S3 laptop which came with Windows 8 installed. After following the Beginner's Guide to install Arch alongside Windows, Linux works but Windows fails to boot. When I select Windows from the GRUB menu I get kicked out to rescue mode with a "file not found" error. This is a UEFI-GPT setup and in GRUB rescue I get an "unknown filesystem" error when I try to ls the ESP. In fact I get that error for everything except the two ext4 partitions I created during the Arch install.
I'll just briefly run down (what I think are) the relevant parts of the installation process, then post the output of Boot Info Script at the end.
Partitions
I created three partitions during the installation:
Swap (/dev/sda6)
Root (/dev/sda7)
Home (/dev/sda8)
The disk already had an EFI System Partition (/dev/sda2) so I used that instead of creating my own, mounting it to /boot as described in the beginner's guide (not /boot/efi as in the GRUB docs - not sure if that makes a difference).
Boot Loader
I installed and configured GRUB exactly as described in the beginner's guide:
# pacman -S grub efibootmgr os-prober
# grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
This appeared to work. Os-prober found my Windows OS ("Found Windows Boot Manager on /dev/sda2@/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi") and added a corresponding menuentry to grub.cfg. On discovering that this didn't actually boot, I added a custom Windows entry per the GRUB dual-boot instructions. That didn't work either.
Boot Info
Here is the output from boot info script which includes my grub config, partition info, fstab etc. One strange thing is that the script found every boot file on the ESP except the Windows Boot Manager, including leftover files from short-lived installations of Elementary OS and gummiboot. Maybe Windows is the "Unknown BootLoader" mentioned at the end.

I tried tackling this myself and ended up not being able to boot into Linux either. I had to go back to the USB install stick and redo a lot of the installation. I thought I'd better ask for some advice before diving in again. Let me know if you need any more info or log/config files.

I believe that when setting up a dual boot system for a Windows 8 pre-existing system you need to turn off "fastboot" in Windows 8, and also disable "Secure Boot" in the BIOS. Did you do both of those before starting out?
If you do a standard arch install it will not be compatible with Secure Boot. Also fastboot in Windows 8 is I believe a kind of hibernate - and leaving it on when doing an install can upset things.

Yep, turned off both of those.

# pacman -S grub efibootmgr os-prober # grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

I think this is due to Windows 8 by default doing "Hibernation" rather than "Shutdown" everytime you poweroff the system. This is due to the fast poweroff and startup feature of Windows 8. However due to this all FAT and NTFS partitions in the drive somehow become FS corrupted (not corrupted as per Windows, but mots of the linux tools fail to read those partitions properly). The solution to this issue it to turn off or disable Hibernation in Windows by following http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920730 .
Offline
I'm fairly sure that I disabled Hibernation along with Fast Startup. Not sure how I would check that though given that I can't boot into Windows any more.

You should still have the "Windows Boot Manager" entry in the firmware boot menu. Otherwise use UEFI Shell from a USB drive and manually launch /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi to boot into Windows.
Offline
The same thing happens. Moving "Windows Boot Manager" before "arch_grub" in the BIOS or running bootmgfw.efi directly from a UEFI shell both dump out to GRUB rescue with the "File not found" error.

The Boot Info Script output you posted earlier shows no evidence of a bootmgfw.efi file, which makes this statement puzzling. Of course, it could be that your Boot Info Script output was incomplete; or you might have done something after running the script to create that file. Still, you should look for it to be sure it's really there.
Also, would you by chance have run the Ubuntu Boot Repair tool on the computer? That program can optionally (and the past did by default) rename the ESP's EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi to EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bkpbootmgfw.efi (or other names in the past) and put a copy of GRUB in its place. This can complicate future maintenance (like now, if my guess is correct). The fix is to rename bkpbootmgfw.efi back to bootmgfw.efi.
If these measures don't help, you might need to use a Windows repair utility to restore your bootmgfw.efi file, or extract it manually. See step 3.5 on this page for details.
In the future, be sure to keep backups of your ESP. I see a lot of problems on forums that are caused by the ESP being damaged. A file-level backup (like a tarball) and knowledge of "efibootmgr" works fine.

The same thing happens. Moving "Windows Boot Manager" before "arch_grub" in the BIOS or running bootmgfw.efi directly from a UEFI shell both dump out to GRUB rescue with the "File not found" error.
I think your case is similar to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=170444 (similar symptom https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1330306 ) and the solution is https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1330354 . Try that. I can't think of anything else that might cause this issue.

Also, would you by chance have run the Ubuntu Boot Repair tool on the computer?
A timely question. I was just reading up about Boot Repair as it seems to be the answer to a lot of dual boot questions online. I was surprised to find a bkpbootmgfw.efi on my machine. Renamed it to bootmgfw.efi and dual booting now works! I don't remember running Boot Repair (it was a few months ago now that I did this install) but I guess I must have while playing with Elementary OS.
I reran the boot info script and bootmgfw.efi still doesn't show up in the list of boot files on my ESP. In fact nothing from /EFI/Microsoft shows up. But the files are obviously there and working so I'm not too concerned. Maybe it's as simple as the script only looking in EFI/Microsoft and not EFI/Microsoft/Boot.
I'm marking this solved. Thanks everyone for the help.

No, it definitely looks in EFI/Microsoft/Boot for boot loader files. My hunch is that one of two things is happening:
There's a bug in the Boot Info script that's causing it to miss this file. If so, filing a bug report is in order.
The FAT filesystem on the ESP is damaged. This may be correctable by unmounting it and running dosfsck on it in Linux, or by using CHKDSK in Windows. Note that one common cause of this type of damage is the Windows "fast startup" feature. (Note that this is not the same as the fast boot feature found in many EFIs; this is a Windows feature.) See here (or many other pages) for information on disabling this feature. Even if you've disabled this feature, it's possible that it's caused problems already, so you might want to repair the filesystem.
Offline
As mentioned earlier, Fast Startup is off. I disabled it before installing Linux. dosfsck looks clean.

No, it definitely looks in EFI/Microsoft/Boot for boot loader files.
I'm not sure it does. This is the only mention of efi files I can find in the script.
# Check FAT filesystems for EFI boot files.
for file in "${mountname}"/efi/*/*.efi ; do
# Remove "${mountname}" part of the filename.
file="${file#${mountname}}";
if [ -f "${mountname}${file}" ] && [ -s "${mountname}${file}" ] && FileNotMounted "${mountname}${file}" "${mountname}" ; then
BootFiles="${BootFiles} ${file}";
fi
done
Looking for "${mountname}"/efi/*/*.efi will only pick up files one level down from, say, /boot/EFI. Files in /boot/EFI/Microsoft/Boot are two levels down. I copied bootx64.efi into /boot/EFI/Microsoft and the script picked it up. This is with the latest version of bootinfoscript afaik.

I've seen numerous Boot Info Script outputs that do find EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi. That said, I haven't studied the script in detail, so I don't know what's locating that file. Also, I've seen a few Boot Info Script outputs that miss obvious files -- in fact, I just tried it on my own system and it failed to detect any of the EFI boot loaders that are present. Thus, it's clear that the script has bugs.

@pauldice: Always try the latest script from bootinfoscript sourceforge -git repo at http://sourceforge.net/p/bootinfoscript … ster/tree/ . See http://sourceforge.net/p/bootinfoscript … it_browser for the latest commits. As you can see lots of things seem to have been changed after 0.61 release. That said I don't use this script much, but I update it from -git before I use it, if required.
