System is randomly freezing.

Hi archers!

I have problem with system freezing, which randomly freeze on some events. For example when I'm trying to play video in Xine and then want to end xine, I just hit "q" to quit and then the system completely freezes. I cant move the mouse cursor or Ctrl+Alt+Backspace. Nothing.

Now I dont know if it is there something wrong with my nVidia driver or graphic card, or just with the xine video driver. I use openGL video driver because with others I cant control the color settings on videos.

So what you think is the problem? Any useful sugesstions?

Thanks for all, and merry christmas smile

Re: System is randomly freezing.

Are you using some Nforce hardware? Many people experience problems like yours with Nforce2 mainboards. I'm having these lockups on two different Nforce2 boards. But maybe it's just something totally different...

Do you, by any chance, have a lot of dust in your machine?

I have relatively "new" hardware. I have new Asus P4P800 Deluxe mainboard and nVidia GeForce 6000 256Mb graphic card but I'm not sure now, when I type: "lspci" in many devices is:Unknown device I don't know why.

Re: System is randomly freezing.

You could try giving the kernel some further options at boot prompt: nolapic/noapic/noacpi.

Re: System is randomly freezing.

I use lilo. There I can hit "Escape" and enter "kernel26 nolapic noacpi" to test. If it works for you add it into your bootloader.

And can I ask what is it for? Maybe stupid question but I'm not sure.

Re: System is randomly freezing.

I have similar hard freezes with xine. They started  a few days before this thread. I have a recent system with Intel MB/video card.  These freezes happen sudenly when playing video.  Maybe they happen when I move the mouse. I'm not sure about that.  I'm also having them when playing music with quodlibet.  However, if I use other audio/video players there is no freezes. :?

Re: System is randomly freezing.

I have been having hard freezes when playing movies and moving the mouse, this was happening using gxine and mplayer so out of curiosity I installed the Archck kernel in comminity and so far have not had the problem since :?

Maybe worth trying the ck kernel.

Thanks, I will try it. Incidentally, the kernel was also updated at the time the freezes began.
