Hello everyone,
I have done my search and cont find a thing for my problem. I had the nouveau driver installed on a desktop machine and everything worked fine, then after a kernel update I couldnt boot my machine. I just installed nvidia drivers and everything was fine. I waited for some kernel updates and i now want to go back to the free driver (nouveau) but i still have the same problem. The pc hangs at boot and the display is ":: running early hook [udev]". I know it is not a visual problem because ethernet is not up, sshd isnt active, so its not just the monitor but the whole thing.
I think it has to do with the KSM because if I set nouveau.modeset=0 on kernel parameters the system boot successfully. But isnt it wrong to boot the machine without KMS?

The systemd hook has replaced the udev hook in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.

I only use HOOKS="systemd" in my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf & I use the nouveau driver for my GT 630 on my x64 system without issue.

Hello,
I tried booting up replacing udev and base with systemd hook but still no login screen. The boot process now hangs after booting some systemd services like network and sshd. Any other suggestions because I have no clue how to get nouveau working so I have no other option but to use nvidia driver which is propriatary.

Polichronucci, your not giving us a lot to work with here. What is your hardware especially video card, are you using x32 or x64 Arch Linux? What desktop are you using & what desktop manager do you log in with & how have you set up the DM (systemd or xinitrc)?
We also need more info on the upgrade that that caused the issue. What version was your last stable kernel & what version did you upgrade to? Have you had a look through the Arch forums & bugs to see if any relate?
After removing the nvidia driver & reinstalling the nouveau did you ensure that you rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

Well I use x64 Arch Linux and NVIDIA G98 [GeForce 9300 GS].I log in from console and I use Ratpoison for wm. I use systemd. The last working kernel was 3.6.11-1 and then I upgraded to 3.7.4-1. Last working nouveau version was 9.0.1-1 and i upgraded to 9.0.2-1. I have seached for some time now but I could find anything. And yes I removed xorg.conf.

How are you installing updates?
I haven't updated for 2 weeks and I have
uname -r
3.11.2-1-ARCH
pacman -Ss nouveau
extra/nouveau-dri 9.2.0-2 [installed]
Mesa drivers for Nouveau
extra/xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.9-1 (xorg-drivers xorg) [installed]
Open Source 2D acceleration driver for nVidia cards
And nouveau works ok, except for the few bugs that nouveau has had for months.
Last working nouveau version was 9.0.1-1 and i upgraded to 9.0.2-1
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/nouveau-dri-9.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz was Feb 2013, which is as far back as I've kept, or did you mean 9.2.0

No no no no no, you didn't understand. The versions I mentioned are the last working version and the first in which I got the problem. I now have the last version of nouveau and latest kernel.

I am having a similar problem with a clean installation of arch 2013.10.01, the display hangs on the booting process, but the machine is still operational, i can login but the display is never updated.

Apologises for the misunderstanding.
Having a quick troll through the Arch forums & Arch MacBook wiki, it appears that getting MacBooks to work nicely with Linux can be a bit troublesome. The Nouveau driver should work with the Nvidia 8600M, but clearly according to your log it isn't.
I don't believe that booting without KMS to get a system to boot is wrong especially if that is your only option.

Sometimes though one needs to be pragmatic & if the Nouveau driver doesn't work on your hardware then using the Nvidia driver until the Nouveau driver works again may need to be an option.
I am able to use the Nouveau driver on my system but the wife's Alienware laptop has SLI Nvidia cards that will only work with the Nvidia driver.
Nvidia announced last week that they will begin to work with the Nouveau developers so we may all see some improvement in the future.
