Annoying hangs when playing video

Hello.

I have the following issue.

Whenever I play a video in mplayer or flash (haven't tested with other video players), every few second it hangs slighty. It doesn't skip anything, it just stops for a second or so.
It happens both when plugged in and on battery. I use the open source ati driver, laptop is a hp 635 with a Radeon HD 6320. It worked fine on Debian and Ubuntu with the same driver.

You can select different output drivers for mplayer with the -vo option (look for VIDEO OUTPUT DRIVERS in man mplayer). Try a few and see which one works best (FYI I've been using vx xv together with the open source ati driver).

Changes nothing besides video quality.
Also doesn't explain why the same happens in flash videos
