Incidentally, I noticed one other small issue. I had to uninstall the AUR package ttf-sil-fonts (which includes Gentium Plus) before installing ttf-gentium-tug-ibx. These should probably be marked as being in conflict. (Not sure whether or not the other SIL fonts in that package are available in your bundle; Charis and Gentium are really the only ones I use regularly.)

I will get this fixed in a while and re-up the package.

By the way, here we (possibly) go with all sorts of headache a bloated multifont package from the AUR can cause… I'm afraid that as long as this sort of practice persists (i.e. putting +50 different families into a single package, half of which 90% of the people are never going to use), the problems with conflicting files will keep emerging. sad

I want to add a "me too".

I use my computer/s 7 days a week and having nice and legible fonts is so much more than a luxury!

My optometrist would call it a human right, and that is exactly what you are providing. smile

@bohoomil

Have you heard about the new Firefox OS font Fira? It seems to be pretty awesome.

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/?O=0&K=fira

http://mozilla.github.io/Fira/

Will you add it to your font collection?

I noticed that some of the fonts in this repo are in type1 format. I was wondering what the reason is to prefer it over odt/ttf?
I am asking because I just noticed that for some reason LibreOffice is not able to see the type1 fonts.
I also noticed that LibreOffice does not recognize any of the mapings from fontconfig (e.g. Arial -> Liberation Sans). Is there anything I  can do about this, or does LibreOffice just suck?

I haven't found any mention of this repo in the wiki. Do you plan to add it?

Re: infinality-bundle-fonts: a free multilingual font collection for Arch

Thank you for all the feedback -- I appreciate it.

@karol, Wiki is on my checklist, and so is documentation. I hope I will be able to 'fill the gaps' in the Wiki this week (I'm thinking of moving the entire bundle blah-blah to a separate page, leaving only a brief info in 'Font configuration' section).

@gothmog.todi, let's face the reality wink

I noticed that some of the fonts in this repo are in type1 format. I was wondering what the reason is to prefer it over odt/ttf?

Briefly, the quality of T1 fonts. Many of them are way easier to handle, they usually render more correctly than TTFs (and sometimes OTF), which means the configuration can be simpler, clearer and less confusing. T1 format has some limitations over OTF (the former's mapping couldn't be as complex as modern OTFs -- hence more individual files for various glyphs that nowadays a single OTF file can offer). However, I find many T1s still more precise and generally better than modern outline variants.

I am asking because I just noticed that for some reason LibreOffice is not able to see the type1 fonts.

LibreOffice can utilize PostScript fonts easily once they are recognizable to its engine. Do the following:

1. Install 't1lib' from [extra].
2. Go to /usr/share/fonts/Type1 and, as root, issue

# type1afm *.pfb

The *.afm (Adobe Font Metrics) files will be generated and next time you launch LO, all the missing fonts should be there.

(I should have probably generated *.afms and put them in font packages: I will do this in the forthcoming updates.)

I also noticed that LibreOffice does not recognize any of the mapings from fontconfig (e.g. Arial -> Liberation Sans). Is there anything I  can do about this, or does LibreOffice just suck?

You mean: you don't see Arial in the font menu? I'm afraid this can't be done, unfortunately…

@orschiro, Fibra's are fine indeed, I like them very much. I think the size of two more packages shouldn't shrink server's HDDs too much. wink

bohoomil, when I choose PT Sans, it won't be chosen, it becomes Arimo instead. Also, there are Noto Sans [uknown] fonts.

Re: infinality-bundle-fonts: a free multilingual font collection for Arch

Lots of my pdfs render random (seemingly) glyphs now. Some sort of microsoft font (not sure exactly which) used in all those affected, as far as I can tell. Downgrading to 2.10.95-2 works, everything is legible then. Currently use the repo.

My microsoft fonts are from ttf-ms-win8 (AUR) if that's important.

FC_DEBUG=1 evince

Is a much easier way to determine the fonts used.

Re: infinality-bundle-fonts: a free multilingual font collection for Arch

@Perfect Gentleman, issue

[~] $ fc-match "PT Sans"
PTS55F.pfb: "PT Sans" "Regular"

and see if the command returns the same output. Since Paratype fonts are in Type1 format, you may need to perform the same operation as described in the post above (assuming LibreOffice cannot see the family).

@ngoonee, There's no need to downgrade anything. Just run

# fc-presets set <option 2>

and fontconfig will use exactly the same settings as v.2.10.95-2.

Works. Where's the source of this bug, and will this have to be done again on next update? Thanks for your help smile

Re: infinality-bundle-fonts: a free multilingual font collection for Arch

@ngoonee, it's not a bug, just the opposite. tongue As it has been already mentioned in this thread (and the other), fontconfig-infinality-ultimate will support free fonts from [infinality-bundle-fonts] repository in the first place. This means that default presets in /etc/conf.d directory will be linked to ../conf.avail.infinality/free by default. MS font families will be supported as well, just like before, but during the first installation (or the one-time upgrade we have had) the correct presets must be set manually using the fc-presets script.

As for the future updates: I'm still not sure how I'm going to solve the problem of fontconfig-ib portability. I'd like to make it relatively easy for other distributions to use the code and instead of hard-setting the presets, leave the choice to the packager or a user. If this option wins, you're fine because the upgrade hook in the *.install file will not interfere with the settings of your choice. Personally, I find it a sane way to go as well as the easiest one.

@Perfect Gentleman, I'm not sure whether there is a hidden question in the listing, but it looks OK. wink Errors mean that for some fonts *.afm files were found and new ones were not created. 'Unknown' fonts: I don't have any, but sometimes it means that your font collection may need a cleanup (there may be somewhere a font belonging to the Noto family that came in a different package for example ). Practically, this is nothing disturbing and won't do any harm.

As promised, I updated Type1 packages and now all *.afm files included. Those of you who have already generated metric files will encounter a typical error message from pacman ('conflicting files'). Simply --force install the new packages to resolve the issue.

Fibra family is present in the repository, too.

And since I received a very optimistic e-mail, it is possible that the hosting quality will improve soon. smile

You can ignore them: they don't look nice but are harmless.

Re: infinality-bundle-fonts: a free multilingual font collection for Arch

UPDATE: Please ignore my first post... I forgot to do one last check... my pacman.conf was left off the 's' in fonts.

First, I've been using the infinality-bundle repo from the start and  I must admit without infinality-bundle hight doubt I would have installed Arch on both of my laptops. Only tody did I learn of the infinality-bundle-fonts repo. I add the repo to pacman.conf, imported and signed the key (again) and updated pacman. However, I keep running into problems.

 infinality-bundle 7.0 KiB 702K/s 00:00 [########################################################] 100%
 infinality-bundle.sig 287.0 B 0.00B/s 00:00 [########################################################] 100%
 infinality-bundle-fonts 15.0 B 0.00B/s 00:00 [########################################################] 100%
 infinality-bundle-fonts.sig 15.0 B 0.00B/s 00:00 [########################################################] 100%
error: GPGME error: No data
error: failed to update infinality-bundle-fonts (invalid or corrupted database (PGP signature))

However, on my other laptop I'm able to use the fonts repo without any errors... what might I do other changing using SigLevel = Never for the fonts repo?

Delete it. Make sure you have the key and have signed it and try again. [Do you really want to install all of the extra fonts? Why?]
