I recently updated to the newest version and it resulted in making some of the fonts pretty ugly and unreadable. I haven't had this issue before with other upgrades. I tried "fc-cache -f" but didn't have any luck. I also tried rebuilding ttf-ms-win8, and also tried reinstalling all packages on my system. I also tried the "fc-presets set" and set them to "2 - ms". Any ideas would be appreciated. Here's a picture of what I'm experiencing:

I just had to downgrade because the new upgrade made KDE's konsole unusable. Some applications wouldn't use the system wide font, even KDE's own (such as Kate). In konsole their was a weird space between the $ and when you type.

Before Upgrade:

[justin@Arch_Alienware ~]$ sudo|

After Upgrade:

[justin@Arch_Alienware ~]$      sudo|

All of the fonts in konsole were bigger than they usually were, also, when I tried to edit text in konsole it would look like this:

[justin@Arch_Alienware ~]$    su|     do

My cursor is indicated by the |. While erasing text, text would disappear in the blank space, making editing in konsole unusable.

System wide font is Ubuntu and the terminal font ubuntu-monospace.

@BobL21, first of all, check the symbolic links in /etc/fonts/conf.d: you should have 5 files linked to ../conf.avail.infinality/ms/. I suppose something must have gone wrong there.

By the way, which fonts are you using for GUI and terminal?

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Just to weigh in, I saw a bad font selection from the new fontconfig, so have rolled back just the 64 and 32 bit packages of it, for now.

All title bars in XFCE and the Menu/Edit/Help bars and XFCE panels became fixed width font, except bold text within those areas, which all became serifed.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Just also did an upgrade, fonts look horrible....

[2013-10-12 08:15] [PACMAN] upgraded freetype2-infinality-ultimate (2.5.0.1-5 -> 2.5.0.1-7)
[2013-10-12 08:15] [PACMAN] upgraded fontconfig-infinality-ultimate (2.10.95-2 -> 2.11.0-3)
[2013-10-12 08:15] [PACMAN] upgraded lib32-freetype2-infinality-ultimate (2.5.0.1-4 -> 2.5.0.1-5)
[2013-10-12 08:15] [PACMAN] upgraded lib32-fontconfig-infinality-ultimate (2.10.95-2.1 -> 2.11.0-2)

One of those packages must be the problem.

Unfortunately i do not have the packages to downgrade anymore; i never had to downgrade anything before tongue

Same for me: http://i.imgur.com/XTkU3iM.png

I downgraded to lib32-fontconfig-infinality-ultimate-2.10.95-2.1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz and fontconfig-infinality-ultimate-2.10.95-2.1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

With the new update all the symlinks to the /ms folder are gone. I manually created all 5 symlinks and now everything seems to be fine.

Edit: Pacman Log shows

[2013-10-12 08:15] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] Removing redundant symlinks ...

I guess that's the point, where those symlinks were deleted and not recreated.

Did you install the new version of fontconfig-infinality-ultimate, following the instructions in this post, or upgrade? In order for the upgrade to work correctly, you have to 1) remove the previous version of fontconfig-infinality-ultimate, 2) install the new one with 'pacman -S' (not 'pacman -U / -Syu').

Not really, this function has been present for quite a time…

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Last update messed some of the fonts up.

[2013-10-12 11:32] [PACMAN] upgraded freetype2-infinality-ultimate (2.5.0.1-5 -> 2.5.0.1-7)
[2013-10-12 11:32] [PACMAN] upgraded fontconfig-infinality-ultimate (2.10.95-2 -> 2.11.0-3)
[2013-10-12 11:33] [PACMAN] upgraded lib32-freetype2-infinality-ultimate (2.5.0.1-4 -> 2.5.0.1-5)
[2013-10-12 11:33] [PACMAN] upgraded lib32-fontconfig-infinality-ultimate (2.10.95-2.1 -> 2.11.0-2)
[2013-10-12 11:37] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -S lib32-freetype2-infinality-ultimate'

Text in Google search box is not properly aligned anymore and Github looks really bad.

On the up side, fonts seem to look bigger.

/facepalm, I had opened both bundle and fonts threads, and I thought that was quote from fonts OP instructing to -Rdd fontconfig-infinality.
Everything is fine now, sorry to waste your time.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

No problem. wink I am aware of the fact that this sort of upgrade/re-installation may be confusing, but in order to make the project functional a switch like this had to be performed. At first I wanted to add another post-upgrade hook to the *.install file, but then I decided to force re-installation of the package instead. I hope that once I manage to improve Makefiles properly, such issues should not be the case any more.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

That was an interesting update. A lot of my screen text suddenly turned itself into some heavy gothic print. Looks pretty fun, but I have to say not the best choice for monospace (rather hard to read in the terminal):
roqBKqEt.png
jUyPDSWt.png

I have since switched to infinality-bundle-fonts, and it's awesome. Somehow looks way better than with what I had installed before (ms-fonts).
Bohomil, again, a big thank you for creating these packages.

For the record, I am using KDE (including Konsole and Kile which uses Kate etc.) and don't see any problems.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Hi, I've got issues with a particular font with the new patch. It is Inconsolata downloaded from here:

http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/fonts/ … /opentype/

Particularly with gVim. There's rendering issues with some letters (especially in italics and in the end of the line), cyrillic looks horrible, etc. However, Inconsolata downloaded from here:

https://github.com/Lokaltog/powerline-f … onsolataDz

Works pretty much fine (except that it has the same issue with rendering an italic small "d" in the end of the line in gVim).

Any ideas why this might be and how to fix it? smile

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Thanks for all the good work. smile

One small problem.  In chromium browser (but not chrome browser) text (sans-serif) was showing up as a Gothic style.  Especially ugly on the Drudge Report.

So I set the fonts (Chromium ≡>Settings>Advanced settings>Web content) to the ones you offered at infinality-bundle-fonts: a free multilingual font collection for Arch Linux: Popular proprietary fonts substitutions and WOW..! what a big improvement.

I am going to suggest that others might try these Popular proprietary fonts substitutions. cool

@Alien282, use t1-inconsolata-zi4-ibx from [infinality-bundle-fonts] repository, it renders correctly: click.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

I'm getting the following warnings on update:

warning: t1-opensans-ib: local (1.10-2) is newer than infinality-bundle-fonts (1.2-4)
...
Couldn't determine weight for Lucida Gr Regular.pfb
Unknown Type 1 weight "BoldItalic"
Couldn't determine weight for qcsbi.pfb
Unknown Type 1 weight "normal"
Couldn't determine weight for Lucida G.pfb
...

The thing with Lucida Grande is a known problem. However, I don't remember seeing the line concerning qcsbi.pfb before.

Great - thanks. Does the same go for the "local is newer than repo" warning? Safe to ignore it?

Safe -- this update is also fixing those minor glitches like version numbers, missing license/documentation files, etc. Hence the downgrade message you've noticed, but again, it's harmless.

Well, it's not downgrading it. Pacman ignores it because the installed version is newer. Should I reinstall the package to force a downgrade?

There is also the way you mentioned for installing infinality-bundle-fonts: first unsinstall with -Rdd, then install again with -S.
It should also work if you specify the package name (e.g. pacman -S fontconfig-infinality-ultimate freetype2-infinality-ultimate )
