[SOLVED]After upgrade, I seem to have issues with dbus or permissions.

Greetings all this is my first post on these forums(which have helped me fix many problems).  So If I miss explain something or am doing something wrong please let me know.  I know enough to be dangerous, scary I know!

So the problem is after a recent upgrade( I upgrade every couple days and I do check the forums/main page before upgrading) when my system boots up the last thing I get is starting accounts service and I get the use of my mouse.  But I do not get greeted by the login greeter, I still see all of the text from the boot process.  Instead if I switch to another virtual console and log in as root I can start X and it takes me right to my desktop.  Last time I tried I could not do this as a non-root user  If I check journalctl -ab I see alot of this:

 systemd[368]: Failed to open private dbus connection: Failed to connect to socket /run/usr/120/dbususer_bus_socket: No such file or directory

I see the same thing to which I assume is for the root user.

I found this post and sounds very similar if not dead on:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=157545   ---> https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … ?id=157545

But I do not quite understand it or I am missing something.

I went through the Arch Wiki for systemd Users and my problem still exists.

The only service that is failing is samba.

I have three machines I run Arch on, two using mate(which this machine is one of them) and the other is gnome.  The other two are working fine.  Any pointers would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!!

Welcome to the Arch Linux forums smile

I think cookies is on the right track.  Might I offer a friendly critique of your first post? We don't know much about your system.  You should probably told us which greeter you use, which desktop environment / window manager you are using.  Lastly, "A recent Update" does not help much -- we don't know what packages you've.  It would be better to post the tail of your pacman log that covers the packages that have been recently updated.

Re: [SOLVED]After upgrade, I seem to have issues with dbus or permissions.

@cookies and @ewaller thank you for the replies, the welcome and the critique.  Hopefully I can fill in the blank.

@cookies:
Yes I did see the post prior to posting.  It is just strange that on three systems, two have no issues and the third did this.  But that is software and obviously I do have something different between them or else this would not have occured.  I posted as I found the one link above but I am not quite understanding it.

@ewaller:
I use GDM as my login greeter, above I mentioned this desktop uses Mate as the environment

An I noticed the warning about /var/log/gdm and permissions.  But I also received that on my desktop at work which also runs the same greeter and desktop environment(GDM/Mate), an it is fine in regard to this issue.  As another side note I did do a --ignore bluez as can be seen in the snippet.

Thanks again!

I've got a similar X environment, and the same issue - I removed gdm and went back to lightdm which came up fine but wouldn't actually let me into X of which I tried - mate/xfce4/awesome none worked. Reinstalled xfce, xorg, mate, gnome, and gdm - still nothing.

Like you, I had bluez issues too. It wouldn't update from 4 to current. I ended up removing gvfs-obex (from dependancy), then bluez4 completely and letting bluez install as per upgrade. Then it went wak.

removed the bluetooth dongle, uninstalled bluez - no change.

Same as you, run startx - straight into the core xorg environment.

Re: [SOLVED]After upgrade, I seem to have issues with dbus or permissions.

Well I decided to use the Arch Roll back Machine for now and rolled back to mid September, as I could not fix my issue as of yet.  An seeing as two out of my three Arch systems did not experience this issue, I can live with a roll back to troubleshoot further over the weekend.  I will post if I fix or make my situation worse.  Thanks again!

Re: [SOLVED]After upgrade, I seem to have issues with dbus or permissions.

Greetings all,

Well here is where my lack of Linux experience will greatly show.  As I stated in post 4 when I would do

pacman -Syu  --ignore bluez

Because of the conflict message I would receive.  But because I had an odd issue at work on my system there which I run mate as my desktop environment and where after a pacman -Syu --ignore bluez I had a similar issue, I decided to apply a similar idea.  So in the instance with this PC for which I did this:

pacman -R mate-bluetooth mate-user-share

Then I ran a full upgrade and voilà, I don't have the problem anymore.  Meaning that I get to my greeter and have my desktop environment with my non-root user.  I will marked this solved in a day or two.  But I am hoping someone can post here and tell me why would ignoring bluez cause this issue.  It makes no sense to me as of this moment and I am hoping someone can shed some light on this.  Thank you.
