How do you prevent the screen from turning off after a timeout?

I have a relatively old installation, so this issue might be harder to track down.

My computer display goes dark after a certain period of inactivity and I am not sure what is causing it. I use a window manager, not a desktop environment, I checked all of my start up scripts and I didn't see anything that would manage power savings or monitors, and I searched the running processes for things named 'screen', 'power', or 'monitor' and nothing came up.

I don't remember installing or configuring anything used to dim or shut off the monitor so I'm not sure where to look.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Sorry that this question is so vague, I'm just not sure what information is relevant.
