How do I get them working?
I read Extra Keyboard Keys and tried:
# showkey --scancodesbut that doesn't produce any (for those extra keys) output either.
I had them working a while ago, except .. that was Windows (XP).

I read Extra Keyboard Keys and tried:
# showkey --scancodesbut that doesn't produce any (for those extra keys) output either.
Keys without a scancode are not recognized by the kernel.
Offline
Missed that one. dmesg doesn't contain anything related to Unknown keys.

If there is no scancode then you cannot map them to a keycode so I think they're useless to you. The scancode is ultimately controlled by the BIOS and ACPI events so it seems that if your current Linux kernel does not recognize those keys you are out of luck. If you google your laptop model and Linux and special keyboard keys perhaps someone has written an ACPI patch for it, if you're lucky.
Philosophy is looking for a black cat in a dark room. Metaphysics is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there. Religion is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there and shouting "I found it!". Science is looking for a black cat in a dark room with a flashlight.

I could do some searching, BUT - all I know is its serial number. Seriously. It's old, it doesn't have any stickers identifying its model or anything like that and I bought it from hand.
Do such keys usually belong to the keyboard or are they are separate device?
