A few years ago I was listening to a band whose new album was called Unia. The word sounded cool and its meaning isn't too weird, so I used it

(If I remember correctly, it means dream in Finnish)

Pretty close. Uni means dream but unia is plural/tuple. Like sweet dreams = kauniita unia.

Yes! I love Sonata Arctica, Unia was their last good album lol. Thats why I asked, you should check out some of their stuff if you are into that.

I must ask, how does this workout for you? I always loved kde, and think it a shame that a lot of the best qt applications require a lot of kde dependencies. I want to know about any speed difference with QT, if you mix in GTK much, and how you handle the dependencies. Also, have you tried bspwm? I couldn't use i3 because of the artifacts that are left if one uses transparent terminals, but I am moving away from that anyway. If you have tried bspwm, how do they compare, because I am quite happy with it, but there were a few things about the way that i3 handled windows that I liked better.

Well guys, I hope there is no rule against posting multiple times each month. I just keep getting more and more pleased each time I change my setup a little. Loving bspwm all the way. Maybe I should try the git version .

I really need to get a keyboard driven browser, switching tabs in firefox is a pain sometimes. I have it where I can open links and stuff with the keyboard, but I have no idea how to switch tabs. Also anyone know about a cli ebook reader, because that would be greatly appreciated.

May I ask what the calendar program is there? It looks awesome!

Also, try vimperator addon for firefox. It's fully keyboard-driven with vim keybinds.

KDE as my current DE, just kde-base and a few other kde packages. Here's my general purpose desktop. My second virtual desktop is simply a task bar, dock and a random wallpaper for whenever I need to be free from distractions .

Wallpaper: Deus Ex HR
Theme: Glassified
Font: Trebuchet MS
Media Player: MPD+Cantata (I also use ncmpcpp whenever I find myself outside of KDE)

Hi agahnim,

the main reason for me to do this was to be able to use the KDE Oxygen theme in both qt and gtk, and also in the GUI of my own python code. That works without running KDE; what i did is that I installed the KDE apps I still wanted to use (mainly dolphin, gwenview, display manager), but I don't run the KDE desktop and I don't use the KDE way to login and start services. So no widgets either, i'm only interested in some of the looks of kde really, and actually I think I probably use more gtk-apps than qt/kde apps in the end. Also I noticed I am gradually using the console more and more and dolphin less and less..

The result of this is that I have some kde bloat on my system in terms of packages and config files of which I only really use a fraction, but since I don't run the kde desktop and all those kde services, startup is very fast and the interface is very snappy too (it does not compare to how it was when I was still using kde).

In terms of setting it up I remember it was sometimes a bit daunting, since kde is not meant to be used only in parts and most of the kde documentation is geared towards luring mac/windows users and so tends to explain what the menu options mean, not where config files are or how things work under the hood. I vaguely remember that I had to run de kde desktop once to have some of the settings stick, but I forgot the details....

Thank you very much for your reply. I am formerly of the KDE thread myself, switched to openbox and then to bspwm. I have already adapted and prefer cli based applications now, but there are some things about kde that are nice, mainly the qt themes.

herbstluftwm w/ dzen2. stolen colors from earsplit (one of my favorites now ), tamsyn font, 5min. reworked gtk-flatstudio(could be better but it's fine for my rare gui-use). vim distinguished-colors.
