This is a newly built PC so I haven't yet been able to try any other disks in it but this is not a good noise, is it?

Yeah that doesn't sound like a brand new drive should... Whether or not you can get it to work, I would RMA that just to be on the safe side.

I had a drive actually go bad (after years of use) the other day. I didn't have to check SMART or anything, as I could actually hear it grinding from two rooms away whenever I tried writing to it. Meh, it just held my laptops backups... those aren't important right? I mean, I live on the f*cking edge!!!

I have seen people say RMA on a few forums but I don't know what it means. I think it is a US-ism.

Nope, RMA is a world-wide thing. Just go to the manufacturer's support website, and look for an RMA link. You'll need to enter the drive's serial/model number, then it'll tell you whether it's RMA-able or not. They're usually very particular about how you return the drive to them, so I hope you still have the packaging the drive originally came in.

*works at a UK university and often has to RMA drives*

Should I not report it as faulty the supplier? Is there an advantage in going straight to Seagate (in this case)?

I had a Seagate drive go bad about two weeks before the five year warranty was up. I went to their website, registered the RMA (return merchandise authorization), and had a brand new drive in less than two weeks. This was in the States.

I've never returned a drive to a supplier before, so I can't say which would be the better option. I suppose that there's a chance that the batch is bad, and the supplier will unknowingly send you another faulty drive from their stockroom, whereas the manufacturer (in my experience) will test the drive they send you before shipping it to make sure that it's a good one.

Yeah, I am pretty sure RMA is a worldwide thing. This is what wikipedia has to say about it.

I guess you could also contact the store from which you bought the device as well. Typically, stores will allow you to return the device to them within so many days or months of purchase. But if it is over that time period, but still in warranty, you have to contact to manufacturer to have it taken care of.

If the store from which you bought the drive is one that you have had dealings with before, and are happy with, then I would try that route first. I guess it is just a matter of store vs manufacturer customer service, so whatever one you feel is right for you... got for it. The worst that can happen if calling the store is that they tell you that you will have to call the manufacturer for an RMA.

That pretty much sums up my thinking. It was delivered a few hours ago so I'm more than covered in terms of DOA/shipping dmg.

Now, the test of service is will they immediately ship a replacement or wait until they get the original back?

BTW, has everyone heard the noise? Are we agreed it's faulty?

I think you'll have to wait until they receive it... which has been pretty much the norm in my experience. Unless of course you make a really, really big fuss about it. But that has never really been my style. I always pity those tech support people, and have a hard time getting mad at them. They may not be terribly knowledgable in many cases, but the old "don't shoot the messanger" adage just comes to mind. Sometimes though, they allow you to put some kind of a deposit down which is returned or recredited when they receive it.

I went back to the supplier and they have raised the RMA. I must have reported it well because they didn't even come back to me for more details!

The MLA* means "Return Merchandise Authorization"

The accepted it was faulty and I am awaiting a replacement. It's not exactly the sort of speedy service I would hope for to be honest. I guess that's just the way it is, though!
