Re: Arch 0.7.1 (Noodle)

on my system, the 0.71 cd wont boot. but then if i pacman -Syu wombat that wont boot either without blaklisting ehci_hcd in rc.conf. problem with my system and the 2.6.15-2 kernel. however it could put some people off using nodle i'd say. theres definitely a problem there. If all I had was the noodle ISO I'd never be able to install arch at all!

its an MSI 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum motherboard.

Re: Arch 0.7.1 (Noodle)

There's one trick you could try.  The non-scsi kernel has USB controllers built as modules, so you should be able to avoid loading the EHCI one by booting with it and explicitly asking for one of the other host controllers.

For example, if you want the UHCI controller, type all this junk at the boot prompt:

vmlinuz_noscsi initrd=initrd.img load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=0 root=/dev/ram0 BOOTMEDIA=cd NEEDUSB=uhci

Of course, this won't work if you're installing from a SCSI CD-ROM drive.  You need the SCSI kernel for that.

Re: Arch 0.7.1 (Noodle)

Did a noodle install..
then an lsmod..
almost fell out of my chair.
o.O
so many modules loaded...yikes!
Turned off "auto hardware detection" in rc.conf..
then put modules I wanted into modprobe.conf

Could this be what causes arch to run so much hotter on my machine?
Sat here in Slackware now, running steadily at 60° or so, but in Arch, no matter what I do, it climbs straight to 71° from even a cold boot (it's a laptop, hence high initial temperatures anyway).

Re: Arch 0.7.1 (Noodle)

hm, if you activate "AUTODETECT=1" in your mkinitrd.conf and build the initrd from new with mkinitrd auto --show perhaps changes something? (less modules to be loaded)
