Basically whenever the lid is the screen is closed blanks but on opening all the applications have disappeared (but still show up in alt-tab). In other words, they're no longer drawn onscreen but do still exist somewhere. Clicking on an application icon does nothing but presumably brings the invisible app to foreground.
Bonus: closing the lid doesn't suspend the laptop but blanks the screen, no idea what's going on there either.
Didn't have this with kernel 3.10, not sure about nvidia and definitely not on gnome-shell 3.8
Restarting Gnome (alt - f2 -> r) has no effect.
Any ideas? Have searched online but couldn't find anyone with even remotely similar issues.

Interestingly, uninstalling nvidia and intel drivers fixes this. Admittedly, I'm not sure what video driver I'm on right now as I doubt it's nouveau. Very slow

Rebooting without nvidia and with stock intel drivers.

Still fixed, currently running the Intel drivers (and Nouveau which is unused)
So a nvidia thing?

Found it, it's due to the xf86-video-intel-virtual-crtc package
I have a W530, in order to use dual monitors I need to install that package (bumblebee etc)

To sum up
xf86-video-intel-virtual-crtc package -> screen blank -> no lockscreen, no applications
no driver -> fine (lockcsreen)
xf86-video-intel -> fine (lockscreen)
xf86-video-intel-virtual-crtc package -> bug reoccurs.
Suggestions as to where to report this bug welcome

Another edit:
removing -virtual-crtc also fixed it not suspending when closing the lid.

FYI, my virtual-crtc package is now obsolete. I'm currently running almost the same setup with the xf86-video-intel-git package. Haven't tested for a while if virtual displays already work with standard xf86-video-intel.
I will update my optimus guide and the archwiki page when things get stable.
