Re: Dell XPS XPS13-2501sLV

@Love_Wolf

I've tried with the previous lts version (got it from Archlinux Rolling Machine) and got a tremulous Xorg (but no black screen)!
I dont have a good knowledge on building kernels and that's why i have tried not to do this by myself.

Re: Dell XPS XPS13-2501sLV

guess you tried with the 3.0.x lts kernel then ? that kernel may be to old to work correctly with your laptop.

If you got those results with the 3.10.x lts kernel, then we could be sure that the problem is unlikely to be in the kernel configuration.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Dell XPS XPS13-2501sLV

Hello ebal,

Did you try to raise this as a bug? Seems like it's a kernel bug in Archlinux from what's I've read. Open a bug here https://bugs.archlinux.org/ and link it to this forum. I am interesting as well as I am looking to purchase a Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition and install Archlinux.

Thanks,
Leonidas

Re: Dell XPS XPS13-2501sLV

@inglor

No i have not opened a bug at bugs.archlinux.org, nor i believe that this is a kernel bug. My archlinux kernel is running as it is supposed to be running.

My guess is that there is a problem (or problems) with the drivers that the UEFI loaders are using in UEFI mode,  but my knowledge on this are near to nil.

Still at this point i cant boot up with a "clean" UEFI mode without the black screen.

Still every official archlinux media on UEFI (cd isos) are giving me a black screen at boot.

Still the only way to boot up is to enable legacy bios but choose (F12) to boot into UEFI.

Re: Dell XPS XPS13-2501sLV

Hi,

Had a very similar problem with ASUS ux32vd, so I  thought I would suggest a solution that worked for me. Very simple stuff, no custom kernels or else.

1. Enable testing repository

2. Install kernel 3.12 (i.e. pacman -S testing/linux), keep the option MODULES="i915" that you probably already have.

I think my problem was a kernel bug. Had it with my Ubuntu installation too, with 3.10.[something]. However, it was not an issue with 3.8.[x].

Disclaimer:
I am a newbie on arch, so take my advise with a caution.

EDIT: read the thread more thoroughly, and added information on the appearance of the problem, which supports the idea that this is the same bug.

Re: Dell XPS XPS13-2501sLV

Some information on that issue. I stumbled upon this information while reading for another Dell laptop with similar hardware configuration. There seem to be a problem with the Intel i915 driver.

Running in legacy BIOS mode or in UEFI mode both work, but for now you'll need to enable "Legacy Option ROM" in the BIOS if you're running in UEFI mode because of the display's backlight. This is because of an issue with the Intel i915 driver that currently affects several systems from many vendors. If you don't enable this BIOS option, the backlight will be stuck at the lowest setting in Linux.

Disclaimer: It's not entirely for Dell XPS 13 but the hardware is similar so my assumption is that this is your issue as well.

Re: Dell XPS XPS13-2501sLV

I have a Dell XPS13-l322x and I had a similar problem.

I was booting the 3.11 kernel just fine using UEFI (gummiboot as the boot manager loads the list of options fine all the time) with Legacy Option ROM turned on because of the backlight issue "inglor" mentioned.  Since the upgrade to 3.12, all I got is black screen and there was nothing in journalctl to indicate that the 3.12 kernel even began its boot process. I had to chroot into my install and roll back to 3.11 and blacklist the linux package in pacman.conf.  I also have the MODULES="i915" set in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.

I also tried updating the UEFI firmware to the latest from Dell (A10) but that also did not help.

Today I had some time so I built my own kernel (changed the package name only so far) based on the process here: Kernels/Compilation/Arch_Build_System
and it booted fine into kernel 3.12.1-1 so I was sure that the problem is with the current precompiled binary package.  Took me a while to realize it but apparently my mirror (http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch) was stale and had only the 3.12-1 (3.12.0-1) package, not the current 3.12.1-1 package.  I switched mirrors and latest is now booting fine as well.  Other than that I am at a loss, check your mirror status and if that does not help, file a bug smile

Good luck!
