Screensavers seem to be giving me a ton of trouble. I've tried gnome-screensaver package and xscreensaver and ended up with xscreensaver. I downloaded the gnome-tweak-tool and in Startup Programs added Screensaver. But I cannot find where I edit the screensaver.

I don't use Gnome, can you tell me what does 'Startup Application' do? Do they start automatically on boot / login?
Have you read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/XScreenSaver ?

Thanks, that did exactly what I needed. Unfortunate that the lockscreen for xscreensaver is so ugly. I wanted my custom lockscreen I had configured on GNOME, any suggestions on a prettier looking DE where that can be achieved?
I realized that by installing gdm what I had in my xinitrc wasn't being used.
