Frequent Kernel Panic & System Crashes/Lockups

Hey guys,

Recently my arch setup has been doing some really weird crap where it will just reboot without warning or lock up while trying to sleep etc etc. I'm fairly certain it's kernel related but holy hell is it hard to track down what's causing this. Is there anyone out there with any tips on tracking down which logs I should be looking at? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Currently running
Arch x64 on Linux-CK 3.11.7-1

Linux 3.11 was a little more stable but nVidia didn't play nice with it so I switched to the linux-ck and nvidia-ck packages.

Let me know if you guys need any more information.

Regards,
TechWiz

Re: Frequent Kernel Panic & System Crashes/Lockups

At a minimum, you will need to post logs: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentatio … /kdump.txt

Also, the difference between the two kernels would be helpful.

Not a Sysadmin issue, moving to Kernel and Hardware...

Whoops I guess I had the wrong tab open.

I didn't know about kdump thanks, I'll get a log in next time I see a crash/panic/whatever.

Also, not sure what the difference is between the kernels, I just read that linux-ck was more nVidia compatible than the stock arch kernel. I'll see if I can find a list or something detailing the changes in linux-ck.

No, I meant the difference you were experiencing; in terms of symptoms, stability, reliability etc...

FWIW, I have had no problems with that kernel and the nvidia blob.

Re: Frequent Kernel Panic & System Crashes/Lockups

I tried getting a kernel dump and I have no idea what is going on but my machine just reboots without even attempting to recover itself. I notice the problem most often while watching videos fullscreen.

As far as symptoms go:
System failing to sleep and locking up with a black screen (Lenovo laptop so the sleep light blinks perpetually and occasionally the wifi LED follows suit)
System failing to sleep with systemd-sleep pegging 1 CPU (100% util)
System spontaneously rebooting (as if someone held the power button for a few seconds)
Xorg pegging 1 CPU
nVidia drivers generally being a *explicit* and causing instability in applications
Bluetooth locking up and needing restart of service, often followed up by system lockup
Wifi very rarely will lock up as well...

...I think I just need to reinstall Arch...
