Oh how I would just l-o-v-e to see multi-cpu kernels!!
Any hope of this happening??
I have to get the kernel source, apply the appropriate konfig-file, run 'make menuconfig' and then compile/link kernel and (now) running mkinitrd. The 'speed' of the appearance of new kernels - well, I would love to be able to have support for multiple cpu's 'out of the box' - especially as any kernel update forces me to save /lib/modules/2.6.whatever-ARCH as it gets hosed!!

[andyrtr@workstation64 libgtop]$ uname -a
Linux workstation64 2.6.15-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jan 3 21:43:30 CET 2006 x86_64 Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 165 AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
The default archlinux kernel has smp build in! Just show us "cat /proc/cpuinfo" if there're 2 cpus listed.

When the system boots, if you see two Arch logos in the upper left corner of the screen, multi-processor support is enabled. I've been getting that out of the stock kernel by default for about a year or more now.

Hmmm - and I have _never_ seen the two 'arches' when booting unless I have put it in myself!! (menuconfig; make etc). At least - this has been true for anything up to and including 2.6.14 - ain't tried 2.6.15 as smp yet.

I've always seen 2 arches... I just never knew it was a processor thing until recently

oooouch!! That hurts!!
I must most humbly apologize - I got arch mixed up with slackware - duh!!!
arch stock kernel _has_ smp enabled - full stop!

Yep, you have to compile it in if you want it in Slack. Some users have complained that it's default in Arch, but I like it this way.

I agree.
For now i am using an Athlon XP 1800, but a new dual-core AMD64 system is scheduled for the 2nd half of this year and it's good to know i don't have to worry about installing arch on that one.
Since both AMD and Intel now have dual-core processors and they are getting cheaper, a lot of new systems will have those.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
