wicd not connecting to wireless

I've been fooling around with this for a while. I eventually thought I determined it to be the router as I didn't understand why wicd wouldn't connect, because everything looked good. So I restore the router to factory defaults, setup the wireless again and manage to connect. After I disconnected however, I can't connect again.

Wired connection does work
I haven't updated anything before this started happening. Nothing has changed at all between when it was working and since it stopped. Below are some logs

Running services:

LOAD = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded.
ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.
SUB = The low-level unit activation state, values depend on unit type.

23 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.
To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.

It looks like a process isn't exiting like it's expecting and is causing this to hang up. What that is I don't know

Re: wicd not connecting to wireless

You have both netctl and wicd enabled. Are they trying to manage the same interfaces? Because it looks like wicd is trying to manage both wired and wireless and I assume netctl is trying to manage at least wired. Make sure only one thing is trying to manage any given interface or they will just argue over it all the time.

If you still have problems, disable everything which is managing your network (wicd, netctl, dhcpd, whatever), follow the wiki instructions for connecting to the wireless network manually and post the steps you do and the output you get.

Re: wicd not connecting to wireless

netctl is only enabled on wired interface, which is exceedingly rare to be used. I've had it configured the same way since I installed arch and the only problem I've had in the past with wireless is when I enabled dhcpcd somehow. Plus I'm trying to get to wireless (no ethernet plugged in), so there shouldn't be any conflict right?

Whats weird is it connected to wireless on it's own just minutes ago. I was on wired for a while, unplugged and tried to connect again in wicd and it didn't (did the "done connecting..not connected" thing) but I walked away for maybe 5 minutes and when i came back it was connected to wireless. So I don't really understand whats going on here. It won't connect when I try to tell it to but will whenever it feels like it

*Edit* I just disconnected to test it and it's still doing the same old. I deleted the wired profile on wicd just to be safe and will go through the manual connection again. I did so earlier and managed to get connected and a local IP but was unable to get connected to the internet for some reason. Will report back

Re: wicd not connecting to wireless

Well wicd is also going to try to manage your wired interface. Indeed, you can see it doing so. (I assume enp8s0 is wired.) By default, moreover, wicd drops a wireless connection if wired becomes available. I don't know how it reacts if something else is trying to manage the wired connection but I don't imagine this is likely to work well on the whole.

But in any case:

Re: wicd not connecting to wireless

wicd can handle wired connections, and automagically too.  So it seems rather silly to have redundant services trying to handle the same thing.  netctl may be enabled on the wired interface only, but that doesn't mean that it might not be conflicting in some way.  You can see that the netctl@ethernet-dhcp.service was in fact started and failed, meaning that it probably has a dhcpcd process open that it is controlling.

When you come and ask for help here, it would probably be better to explore some of the advice rather than argue a bunch of reasons why your setup is perfectly fine.

Re: wicd not connecting to wireless

I followed what Cfr suggested and managed to get connected manually without any errors, both local IP and able to reach the internet.

Brought down all networking daemons and then started wpa_supplicant and  connected using the generated config file. Then brought up dhcpcd on the interface.

wpa_supplicant -i wlp3s0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

Output:

Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
wlp3s0: Trying to associate with cc:a4:62:f7:e3:10 (SSID='Pirate Cove' freq=2437 MHz)
ioctl[SIOCSIWFREQ]: Device or resource busy
wlp3s0: Association request to the driver failed
wlp3s0: Associated with cc:a4:62:f7:e3:10
wlp3s0: WPA: Key negotiation completed with cc:a4:62:f7:e3:10 [PTK=CCMP GTK=TKIP]
wlp3s0: CTRL-EVENT-CONNECTED - Connection to cc:a4:62:f7:e3:10 completed [id=0 id_str=]
iw dev wlp3s0 link

Output:

Connected to cc:a4:62:f7:e3:10 (on wlp3s0)
	SSID: Pirate Cove
	freq: 2437
	RX: 173056 bytes (1239 packets)

	signal: -54 dBm
	tx bitrate: 52.0 MBit/s MCS 5

	bss flags:	short-slot-time
	dtim period:	0
	beacon int:	100

I started dhcpcd using systemctl and then ran:

sudo dhcpcd wlp3s0

Output:

Re: wicd not connecting to wireless

This:

dhcpcd[2111]: sending commands to master dhcpcd process

would indicate that you haven't actually brought down all networking daemons.

Re: wicd not connecting to wireless

Actually, I think the OP probably did bring them all down but then started one again for some reason... (Read the intro to that command.)

EDIT: If it works like this, I think you just need to decide how you want to manage it. Pick ONE management option: netctl etc. would be one option; wicd would be another option. I don't think merely disabling wicd's wired profile is really going to work - you still have two things trying to manage dhcpd etc. and it is just asking for trouble. Pick one and work with that. Disable everything else. (Including: do not start dhcpd directly with systemctl - let the tool you pick manage it as it will try to anyway..)

The more is the miserable where wifi management is concerned. Less is more so enjoy wink.
