I found quite a few topics with similar titles but the fixes in those threads did not work for me (unless I'm doing something incorrectly).
This is probably my fourth attempt installing Arch. I followed the Beginner's Guide for a UEFI mode installation. The guide suggested I use gummiboot as my boot loader so I am currently using that. Here's my output:
ERROR: Root device mounted successfully, but /sbin/init does not exist.
Bailing out, you are on your own. Good luck.
sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
[rootfs /]#
One user suggested to install systemd-sysvcompat, but I think that would require me to install Arch from the beginning again. This time I think I'll try and salvage what I have (unless I need to).
Assistance would be appreciated.

Is /sbin properly symlinked to /usr/bin ?
Edit: Do you have an /sbin/init or /usr/bin/init?

Yes, I have a both, and both are symlinked to ../lib/systemd/systemd

/sbin is NOT supposed to be linked to ../lib/systemd/systemd . Please check again.

Incidentally, you are looking in /new_root, right? i.e. is '/new_root/sbin' a symlink to 'usr/bin', and is '/new_root/usr/bin/init' a symlink to '../lib/systemd/systemd'?

While I admire your determination, are you sure that Arch is the right distro for you? You certainly don't need to reinstall Arch to install a single package. Look up chrooting on the wiki.

I'm not in /new_root, no. /new_root just contains a "lost+found" directory.
I booted up with the live USB disk, mounted my drive, and here are my symlinks:
/bin -> /usr/bin/
/sbin -> /usr/bin
/usr/bin/init ->../lib/systemd/systemd*

I think so. I'm not an entirely newbie to linux. I've used it for many years, but I've never installed it and bought a new laptop just for this purpose. I'm minimal by nature, and have even installed Ubuntu minimal disc, but unfortunately their auto updater made my "minimal installation" not so minimal. A co-worker of mine suggested Arch and after reading up on it I thought I'd give it a try.
I'll read up on chrooting. The most I've read so far is what's in the installation guide.

/new_root is where your root filesystem gets mounted. If there's nothing in there, you're mounting the wrong one. Fix your bootloader config.
