is there an automated way to compile a kernel for the current hardware?

Not really... Is typing makepkg -scri too manual for you?

I just would like to avoid compiling all of the modules.

Try a make localmodconfig while using a script like modprobed-db (see the wiki).  This will greatly reduce the time to compile if that if your thing.

Thank you, that looks like it will work

I'm thinking of trying out Kernel Seeds.

The info on that page is pretty dated... might still work but I say just use the make localmodconfig would be much faster and easier.

Kernel seeds are an excellent way to learn how to build a targeted kernel for your hardware, and I use and recommend them. They are not an automated method, which is what I understand the OP is looking for.

(edit) yes, the information on the page is a little dated, but the methods still work. Kernel seeds are not really about faster and easier -- it's about understanding what you really need and how the process works (again, not really what the OP was asking for, but a different approach to kernel building).

Agreed! It does look dated from the outside but there's a 3.12.0-x86_64 seed at the very bottom of the page.

Re: is there an automated way to compile a kernel for the current hardware

Yes, he keeps the seed configs updated -- it's the instructions for using them that can't keep up with all the config changes. This is where you need to use some intelligence of your own and learn how your hardware works and what you need in your kernel. If you have problems you can ask on the Gentoo forum. Be prepared with a wgetpaste of your kernel config -- they will want to see it, but if you have that they will be very helpful.

(apologies for the sidetrack of the OP's original question)

By the way, the guy who runs the site is a hell of a nice guy, and is famous on the Gentoo boards as pappy_mcfae
