DVB-T (Digital Terrestrial Television) Viewer

Lately I've been unhappy with Kaffeine for use with TV viewing. It lacks development and I don't particularly like installing a million and one KDE libraries (I use Awesome WM). I've tried using Me-TV but it seems to have broken recently due to an upgrade in VLC and it isn't being developed any more. What recommendations can be people give me for a TV Tuner application that can record as well as watch while doing other things on my desktop?

I know you can use VLC and MPlayer but I'm not sure what the easiest way is to set these up.

I'd go with vlc, from personal experience it is the easiest to use and works well. The downside is that you can't program it to record unattended. Setup is easy and you can create a shortcut that will run vlc with all the needed options.

If you want to have more setup work up front, you could try mythtv. I know there is another program similar to mythtv (on the aur I think) but I can't remember the name of it.

xt7-player-git based on mplayer supports EPG and now/next shows, allows to record what you see, but not to program recordings.

XBMC has LiveTV support since version 12. Never tried it myself.

Gnome MPlayer is simple to set up, as it has a default menu entry opening .mplayer/channels.conf as playlist.

I would like to add that I haven't been able to get mplayer to play h264 encoded transmissions, just in case where you live/plan to use this things are transmitted in h264.

Hi!

I didn't understand, why I have to install so many other components just to watch and record tv, so I wrote my own app: tv-star.
It's just a bash-script and only needs the at-daemon and mplayer. But if I remember correctly, the version on my website is an
old one, the new one can convert mpeg-stream to mpeg2 (with ffmpeg) and has an easier menu - I try to upload it today.

Thanks Murray_B. Yeah I currently using TvHeadEnd with XBMC. But XBMC is very clunky to just to have in a window. I'll look into your script
