Thanks.

The SSD locking up, you mean? That happens unless I put "libdata.force=noncq" in the kernel boot line (I use rEFInd, so it goes in the Arch entry in /EFI/refind/refind.conf on the OSX partition; your location may vary). With that setting enabled I have no problem.

"dmesg | grep ATA" gives the following, which I don't think contains any errors. APPLE SSD SM1024F looks like a model identifier, if that's what you're looking for:

[ 0.000000] NODE_DATA [mem 0x46f5f9000-0x46f5fdfff]

Also, apparently kernel 3.13 will contain the speaker patch officially. I think I might hold off until then rather than patch my 3.12 kernel since I don't really need external speakers with any particular urgency. That little red light in my headphone port is annoying, though... tongue

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

Has anyone managed to get the integrated graphics working on the macbook 11,3? I did the usual outb sequence in grub2-efi, but I only see the Nvidia VGA adapter in lspci. Has the outb command sequence changed in this mac's EFI Uversion?

I set libata.force=noncq. So more SSD lockup on boot and I never had one once the machine was up.

And I'm on 3.12 but still no sound on speakers.

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

Installed the NVidia drivers today. Screen brightness control as described above stopped working (I've been using fbdev before).

Other than that I hate the blurry fonts with xrandr. I already got used the crisp unscaled fonts. To bad that unscaled a lot of apps aren't usable.  sad

And I get a black screen when exiting X.

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

@ende42, @DrKillPatient: Thank you both for your anwer.

@ende42: The brightness control does not work for me, although I didn't even try to make it work. I have the same problem with the nvidia drivers: There is no console if I exit X. tongue But this might just be an nvidia driver bug? It happened a couple of times in the past on my HP laptop (9600M+Debian) using some particular driver versions. I also had to specify the font dpi manually because everything was out of scale. Both of the above issues do not appear on the nouveau driver.

Thanks.

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

so i installed 3.13-rc1 from aur linux-mainline, for macbookpro11,2:
- no longer needs nomodeset, linux drivers fixed
- backlight is now working (tested via xbacklight)
- speakers work / optical light works
- powertop skill causes kernel panic

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

Upgraded to 3.13-rc2. I've the rMPB with the nvidia 750m video card (still on Ubuntu 13.04 for 3th party software reasons).

nvidia drivers work with the 3.13 kernel, see https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi … c1-kernel/ for patches.

- Backlight control seems to work fine from KDE
- Still need libata.noncq=force
- Suspend not working
- Hibernate seems to work (but not 100% reliable, it seems to need the i915 boot options)
- Speakers work

Had to fall back to 3.12, because OpenGL crashed the NVidia drivers. Suspend seems to work, just takes longer than I was used to (so I restarted before that point).

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

Hi guys,
I am getting a lot of errors/warnings related to ACPI in dmesg. Do I have to install some kind of software/firmware manually?
I also get this during the start up: "platform microcode: firmware: agent aborted loading intel-ucode/06-46-01 (not found?)".
I installed intel-microcode and iucode-tool but it didn't fix the problem. Any idea what is going on?
Those errors do not cause any problem of course, but they do exist in the output of dmesg. My machine is rMBP 15 late 2013 with nvidia GPU.

Thank you.

PS: I never put the machine into sleep or power saving mode.

edit: I have kernel 3.11 amd64

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

Hi guys,

I've installed Archlinux on my MacbookPro 11,2.

I had some troubles with fonts size using Xmonad, so I made a blog post about it: "Using Archlinux on a Retina (HiDPI) MacBook Pro with Xmonad" => http://vincent.jousse.org/tech/archlinu … ro-xmonad/

I hope it can be useful to some of you.

Enjoy!

Kernel 3.12.4 broke wireless (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/broadcom-wl/) for me. 3.12.3 works fine so far. Niko.

EDIT: Just had to reinstall the broadcom-wl drivers after kernel upgrade. Running 3.12.5 now.

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

Well I dont know If i should post here or where to post else. I dont even know if I really have a question. Maybe I just need some suggestions. I finally retoured my T440p and bought a MacBook. I came from an Acer 1810TZ. A minimalistic machine, which died just recently. I love arch, but as you know there are those things that make you go 'grrr'. Hence I thought I will give Mac OS X a try, at least it is a UNIX. But I don't know how to express it in my nonnative english: I feal kind of retarded. Things that went that fast on arch, not in a sense of performance, more the interaction and productivity, are horribly under OS X. I have to develop c++/JS searchengines at the university. And I dont even know how to start on my Mac. No dotfiles, no vmplayer, no pacman, no DE freedom and I guess there a lot of more no's. Well I am on the 13.3 inch modell so no dedicated graphics card. Would you recommend to give arch a try on the MBP?

Please feel free to correct my english.

Do you have the 2013 model (I think that would be 11,1)? With recent intel-dri package and a 3.13 or 3.12+patches kernel, most things should just work. Prior to the intel-dri updates, you would have needed nomodeset on the kernel boot options, and to use the generic xf86 framebuffer. You will still need "libata.force=noncq" in the kernel boot options to avoid periodic hangs.

I have the 15" Intel-graphics-only (11,2) model. Prior to the intel-dri updates, when using nomodeset, hibernate worked fine, but suspend seemed a little glitchy. Now, with the intel-dri updates, and removing nomodeset, suspend works flawlessly, but hibernate just turns off the backlight and stops. I had to go through the fsck every fs dance at boot a few times due to the battery dieing overnight when I thought I'd put it into hibernate [1]. These days, I just tell it to suspend, unless its going to be unused for a day or more.

As is noted in the wiki, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBookPro11,x , the webcam doesn't have a Linux driver at this point. Also, if you use a Thunderbolt->Gigabit Ethernet adapter, it only shows up in Linux if you plug it in prior to booting. The Thunderbolt->DVI adapter doesn't have this issue.

With the above quibbles, I'm actually quite happy with the MBP as a Linux machine. Next, I'll guess I'll need to get a new external monitor. The UI transition from laptop screen, to my current, 1920x1200, monitor just is a little unwieldy (I prefer to have the external monitor mirror the built-in screen, but the large resolution difference causes this to not work well).

[1] Oddly, one of the complaints that fsck.ext4 has in this scenario is that it thinks the timestamp on the superblock is in the future. Something about the way the battery dies causes the hw clock to lose its head.

Nope sorry. But I think the reader just broke my best SD card when trying to use it in linux. It's no longer possible to use it from OS X either. Did your card survive?

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

I'm having a blast on the 11.1 but cannot wrap my head around the issues I have with suspend to ram.
Both with systemd's suspend and 'echo mem > /sys/power/state' it takes a while for it to really suspend. The keyboard backlight may stay on for some ten seconds. Waking up seems very unreliable either staying blank altogether without signs of life (keyboard, screen, caps lock) or going on and blinking the screen, while it may sometimes pop up just fine albeit a bit slow. No other power managers running, no obvious things to note from logs.

Anyone else with input on this one? I read that others have suspend to ram working perfectly fine.

EDIT: For a moment i was under the impression that pm-suspend was doing a better job. Although waking up is very reliable, suspending takes a while ( 10secs).

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

@BeamMeUpScotty: Actually suspend-to-ram basically worked for me with 3.12.0 on my 11.3 rMBP.

But at some time I noticed the box would wake up again about 30 seconds after closing the lid. `echo XHC1 > /proc/acpi/wakeup` seemed to help for a while but recently I had the same issue again. The MBP wakes up about 30 seconds after lid close, either with or without screen back light on. Anybody any idea how to debug this?

@Meizirkki: I've just tried the card reader once. It didn't automount the the card and this was the point I gave up. The card was still working afterwards.

Suspend and hibernate are likely to be different on the different 11,x MBPs, as they've all got different graphics solutions (unless you've turned off the nVidia GPU on your 11,3, in which case it should be similar to the 11,2). With my 11,2, running a 3.13.0 kernel that I built via the linux-git AUR, suspend just works (both manual suspend and closing the lid). Hibernate, though, hangs and the only thing I can do is hold down the power button until it shuts off.

Hello,

Could you please post what lspci and lsusb tell you? I would like to know whether all three late 2013 retina MBP models have the same sd card reader. For example, I know that on mine, which is a MacBook Pro 11,1, it is a usb device with 05ac:8406 as an identifier. According to https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebia … ard_Reader the 11,1 sd card reader works fine, but I'm uncertain that I can trust that they thoroughly tested it with an SDXC card with UHS-I capabilities, which I plan on using...

Also, if you've figured out a way of getting your SD card reader working fine, please let me know :-) I'm afraid of testing mine in linux without knowing that I won't risk destroying a brand new card...

Thanks,
uriah

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

My SD card reader is also 05ac:8406, Macbook Pro 11,2

I'm not at all certain it was the Mac that broke my card but I'd not risk a card with anything important on it. Fwiw mine was UHS-I tho only 16Gb.
