Re: Kernel 3.6.2 Power Regressions (Sandy Bridge)

@wlmeng11: can you check with no browser open? and with no external displays? after a fresh boot possibly.

Also, what DE are you using? My tests are on Cinnamon 2.0.12

Re: Kernel 3.6.2 Power Regressions (Sandy Bridge)

I am also not having much luck with linux-3.12.1-1 or linux-3.12.1-1 on my thinkpad X220 with an i7 (SB).  Downgrading my kernel to linux-3.11.4-1 returned my power usage to sane levels again and allowed my gpu to idle some.

Re: Kernel 3.6.2 Power Regressions (Sandy Bridge)

@jkelley05: yeah, I rolled back to 3.11.4 too because 3.12 seems to be power hungrier than that version. Haven't tested the last 3.12.x releases though.

Re: Kernel 3.6.2 Power Regressions (Sandy Bridge)

I'm also seeing 100% Powered ON bhaviour on later kernels. This happens when playing videos in mpv/mplayer. Oddly enough this does not appear when using vlc. It also happens when using flash in firefox.

I reverted to 3.11.4 and it's back to normal.

Re: Kernel 3.6.2 Power Regressions (Sandy Bridge)

Hi All,

seems it has bee quiet on this specif post. But since I experience the same issues as the previous poster. I like to re-request, what the current status for this issue is. Specifically I'm interested if its considered closed. But other people that have been watching this for the last 4 kernel releases

I tried every Kernel in the 3.12.* line and my GPU is from the beginning stuck at 100%, no kernel parameter for the i915 modules seems to change that behavior, Im still running at 3.11.6 and everything is as expected. (50 degress) nicely going into Power and RC6

Could the mods please consider this as "not bumping" ...

thanks

Pete

Re: Kernel 3.6.2 Power Regressions (Sandy Bridge)

I am running linux-3.12.7-2 on my T420 and the GPU goes 99% into RC6pp. I am only using the following parameters concerning the i915 modules:

i915.i915_enable_rc6=7
i915.lvds_downclock=1

CPU also goes into idle 99% of the time.  Temperatures and power consumption are completely ok. So for me this bug has been fixed for quite some time now.

Re: Kernel 3.6.2 Power Regressions (Sandy Bridge)

Hi! I am using a X220 i7, too and the problem seems to have returned.
While my CPU is perfectly fine now, no 100% or anything, my GPU is stuck at somewhere between 100% and 80%. Doesn't go down from there.. Even if I am not doing anything at all.

Re: Kernel 3.6.2 Power Regressions (Sandy Bridge)

hey,
I am using the X220 with i7, with kernel 3.12.9-2 i had 100% GPU usage all the time.
I am now using linux-lts version 3.10.29-1-lts which seems to have fixed the problem.

Re: Kernel 3.6.2 Power Regressions (Sandy Bridge)

Huh, that's odd. x220t with i7-2620M on 3.12.9-2 as well, without any issues.
