Upgrade to kernel 3.12 and over -> No graphics unless with "nomodeset"

Hi all,

Soon after kernel 3.12 came out, I downloaded and installed it, as customarily ( custom kernel ). I do not create a proper package for the kernel, I'm afraid I am not really into that stuff, even though it might be of help in managing my kernels, I admit.

Anyway, I found out that all the kernel versions from 3.12 forth ( including the latest 3.13.0-rc2 ) broke my video and freezed my laptop. I'm completely unable to get control of it anymore, and if I log in from ssh before launching X, the connection terminates after a few seconds. No logs, nothing. If I run X from the ssh console, I see the messages stop after "Loading extension GLX"

My laptop is an Inspiron 15R SE, featuring an Intel i7 CPU, which includes i915 graphics, 8GB of RAM, and a discrete gpu board, a Radeon HD 7730M.

I was able to use vgaswitcheroo with the 3.11 kernel, and it worked like charm with a proper X configuration, but even by moving the X config directory to a backup location, the laptop still freezes. I tried several combination of driver configurations, but none worked till now.

The only way I manage to use X is by removing every configuration ( backing them up ), and by passing the "nomodeset" parameter to the kernel.

I noticed by flickering in the screen and really intensive CPU usage during any video playback, so I checked to make sure that I was indeed using the integrated card. I was not.

As I said, unfortunately I'm unable to post anything about the case without nomodeset, as there are no error logs I can post.

.config -> http://sprunge.us/LJja
entire dmesg -> http://sprunge.us/UZgi

Do any of you have the slightest idea of what's going on? This is really driving me crazy. Thank you all for your help.

I don't understand. What happens to the X log and the systemd's journal?

Re: Upgrade to kernel 3.12 and over -> No graphics unless with "nomodeset"

Well, as soon as I try to start X, the screen goes all black but for a fixed "_" on top. Any ssh session drops, and as I reboot, there is no X log. I will double check for any journal, but I remember there was nothing useful either.

The problem is that ( don't ask me why ), when I try to boot without the "nomodeset", everything just goes weird. I use LVM for most of my root directories, because of my SSD/HD configuration, and most of the times the system can't mount those partitions ( it timeouts ).

Just before, after my 6th attempt, I managed to log in single mode, and gather some info:

Without nomodeset
The i915 driver now seems to be in use:

lspci -k -> http://sprunge.us/OSHK

Dmesg shows no more the agpgart failure message:

dmesg -> http://sprunge.us/EgMU

I also printed out some modinfo on i915, not sure if useful.

modinfo i915 -> http://sprunge.us/VeaR

I will try and see if, by enabling the systemd journal, I will see anything.

I think it should be enabled by default. If you configured it so it doesn't write the journal anywhere you can read after a reboot, please change this.

Remember to run journalctl with sudo or as root to get all the info.

Re: Upgrade to kernel 3.12 and over -> No graphics unless with "nomodeset"

Indeed you were right. I though that in single mode all services were not started, but apparently I was mistaken.

However, as I feared, there seemingly is no useful info in it.

journalctl -x -b -1 -> http://sprunge.us/eYeL

Re: Upgrade to kernel 3.12 and over -> No graphics unless with "nomodeset"

Just to check, I just downloaded the 3.11.10 sources andcompiled them with the very same config... Result? Everything is working again. No problem at all.

I don't really know what to think.

--- EDIT

I also just tried the stock Archlinux kernel, which is a 3.12 release, and the system boots and correctly recognizes my videocard. Could there be a problem with my .config? I'm looking into that.

Re: Upgrade to kernel 3.12 and over -> No graphics unless with "nomodeset"

To whom it might help, I found out a solution. Apparently, the problem lies in the "video.backlight=vendor" kernel parameter. By removing it, I manage to get into the system.

I also removed the radeon firmware from being put into the kernel.

I'm still having some problems with the radeon card, but at least I can use the intel card smile
