[2013-12-07 07:28] [PACMAN] upgraded python2-numpy (1.7.1-3 -> 1.8.0-1)Some hours later, I rebooted the computer, which froze as soon as rEFInd said it was starting the kernel, before any initramfs stuff appeared on the screen. Adding debug flags to the kernel at boot was uninformative - the kernel froze all the same without providing additional output.
Downgrading linux and linux-headers to 3.12.2 from within a chroot restored the frozen computer to a bootable state.
Upgrading to kernel 3.12.3 on a separate computer that uses MBR & Grub did not result in any problems.
I'm fairly sure my problem is not related to this other recent topic because at least that person managed to get some error messages!
The following configs from the frozen computer may be relevant (comment-lines removed):

Kernel driver in use: alx
Kernel modules: alxI guess the kind of answers I'm after would be things like:
Is there some config thing I can change that will stop the freezing?
Is there something I can do to increase debugging verbosity beyond passing "verbose debug systemd.log_level=debug systemd.log_target=kmsg log_buf_len=1M kernel.sysrq=1" to the kernel?
Should my problem be filed as a bug report to rEFInd?
Should my problem be filed as a bug report to the kernel devs? (Not something I've done before - sounds scary!)
If the answer to (3.) or (4.) is "yes" but the answer to (2.) is no then is the answer to (3.) or (4.) still yes?
Edit: fixed typo; clarified config file paths.

My guess is that you may be seeing this problem. If you've got a Lenovo computer, this is still more likely (that problem is most common on Lenovos).

Thanks, that definitely looks very similar - although my machine is a Toshiba Satellite.
The gist I get from that thread is if I wait for one or two more kernel updates, the problem should go away eventually. Not a very satisfying way of solving the problem, but it will be trivial for me to add an "IgnorePkg" to pacman.conf for a couple of weeks ...
It wouldn't surprise me if Lenovos and Toshibas use similar chipsets on some non-empty subset of their components. Without full lspci outputs on that other thread, it would be hard to pinpoint which exact hardware should be considered iffy ...

Probably -- but it will then return again. At least, until it's fixed upstream. (I have no idea why that's taking so long; it's not like Lenovos are exotic computers!)

It's almost certainly something about the EFI implementation, not a chipset issue.

Thanks for your help. I gather from your response that they are aware of it upstream and it's just WIP? I can live with that. Saves me filing a bug report when I don't have any error output :-).

If you mentioned it, I didn't catch it, but are you positive the Kernel gets updated in your /boot/efi/EFI.... location when you install/rebuild the Kernel? Install the updated kernel, then check the version in your /boot/efi/EFI/.... folder and make sure the updated version you installed is actually there.

I suggest installing linux-lts alongside the linux package, and not to ignore updates to the linux package. That way you can test if new versions work or do not work, and you still have linux-lts as a fallback.

The upstream kernel EFI code maintainer (Matt Fleming aka mfleming) is aware of the issue and with cfr's help has narrowed down the issue to setup_efi_pci() fundtion in eboot.c file in kernel source. But he is not sure what exactly is causing setup_efi_pci() to not boot in these systems. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad E430 system I had no issue with any of the EFISTUB kernels ever since it made debut in kernel 3.3.
If any of you want to contact him, you may do so via #syslinux channel in freenode irc as he is also the Syslinux upstream maintainer.

The upstream kernel EFI code maintainer (Matt Fleming aka mfleming) is aware of the issue
...
If any of you want to contact him, you may do so via #syslinux channel in freenode irc as he is also the Syslinux upstream maintainer.
I urge anybody who's having this problem and who's willing to engage in debugging tests to do this. I can't speak for Matt Fleming, but as a general rule, the more people who can help on such things the better. (Maybe he's got all the testers he needs right now, but maybe not.) This is especially true if you know enough about C coding to help out. I'd do so, but I've never run into the problem myself....

Maybe I'm a bit fuzzy at the moment (coffee, stat!) but I don't think this is relevant to all EFI systems? In any case, the contents of my /boot/efi are (via "find /boot/efi"):
/boot/efi
/boot/efi/EFI
/boot/efi/EFI/refind
/boot/efi/EFI/refind/refind_x64.efi
/boot/efi/EFI/refind/refind.conf
/boot/efi/EFI/refind/drivers
/boot/efi/EFI/refind/drivers/ext2_x64.efi
/boot/efi/EFI/refind/drivers/reiserfs_x64.efi
/boot/efi/EFI/refind/drivers/ext4_x64.efi
/boot/efi/EFI/refind/drivers/iso9660_x64.efi
/boot/efi/EFI/refind/drivers/hfs_x64.efi
/boot/efi/EFI/refind/drivers/btrfs_x64.efi
/boot/efi/EFI/archI suggest installing linux-lts alongside the linux package, and not to ignore updates to the linux package. That way you can test if new versions work or do not work, and you still have linux-lts as a fallback.
Great idea! Done :-). But I'll also keep the IgnorePkg for the moment to make it more obvious to me when there's a kernel update available.
