Sound is just clicks, pops and static

Hey all,

Anytime I try to play sound, whether is be from mplayer, vlc, spotify, web, or aplay, it just results in either really loud static, or a pattern of clicks and pops. The sound card works just fine in Windows.

Backstory: my onboard sound died after about a week of owning the motherboard, so I RMA'd it and while I wait, I'm using a PCIe Sound Blaster.

I looked around for a solution, but nothing I find seems to work.

I'm using alsa, and pulseaudio-alsa. I've used pavucontrol and attempted to set the Creative card as the default. I've attempted to set the card as default in /etc/asound.conf.

My specs:

Sabertooth 990fx R2.0 (BIOS at 2005)
2x Geforce GTX 660 (both with HDMI audio)
Sound Blaster Audigy FX PCIe

$ sudo aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

card 3: Creative [HDA Creative], device 0: ALC898 Analog [ALC898 Analog]

Let me know if you need anymore information and I will happily provide it!

Re: Sound is just clicks, pops and static

Did you try creating an /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf?
According to the ALSA Project, your sound card (ALC898) has different models it can take as a parameter. You could try using

options snd-hda-intel model=acer-aspire-4930g
options snd-hda-intel model=acer-aspire-8930g
options snd-hda-intel model=acer-aspire
options snd-hda-intel model=inv-dmic
options snd-hda-intel model=no-primary-hp

individually within /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to see if any of those configurations work. Please note that you must reboot after you modify /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf in order for the changes to take effect.
