well i got arch about 1 week ago....i have been busy setting things up the way i like and throught the process ive had it freeze on me alot.....initially i thought it was due to my tinkering...however once i had figured everything out i did a re-install and did not mess around...and it still will occasionally freeze up....its freezes primarly in gnome...generally when i have a terminal up...esp. w/ pacman....it has frozen in just the CLI as well thou....i have not done pacman -Su yet and im using the 2.6.15 kernel if that helps ...is the a common problem? has it been addressed? i really like Arch but if it keeps freazing then i wont be able to use it...Windows XP doesnt even freeze this often on me.....(infact...it doesnt freeze much at all...3 times in the past 3 years maybe...) any input would be helpful...

...is the a common problem?
No, I don't think it is, as it's never been a problem for me in the last year of my running Arch Linux. Note that I don't currently run Gnome, but I've run it off and on during that year without any issues like yours. Maybe someone running Gnome will chime in with some clues about what the problem might be on your machine. In the interim, welcome to the forums.

I've been using Arch for about 8 months now and I've never had it freeze on me. How did you install Arch? Did you just install off the disc? Was it the 0.7.1 ISO?
Typically, right after a clean install (if you didn't do an ftp install), you should upgrade
pacman
, and then upgrade the system to make sure everything is up to date:
$ sudo pacman -Sy pacman
...
$ sudo pacman -Su
Then start with the setup/tinkering. If you're having freezes outside of using X, then I would tend to suspect a hardware issue lurking somewhere (not necessarily a physical hardware issue, but possibly a configuration issue).
--==EDIT==--
Note that if you don't have
sudo
set up yet, you'll have to be
root
to issue those commands sucessfully...

thank you so much for thee quick replies and the warm welecome.
i do have sudo set up. I will try updating and see what happens..I installed from the disk. Im thinking its an ndiswrapper/wifi problem? I dunno because in Ubunut my comp. freezes as well when I am switching networks...perhaps when the connection is dropped or unreachable it messes up sometimes....hmmm i guess will have to see..i have a Linksys WUSB54G ver 4. it uses the rt2500 drivers and i have heard that there is a Linux driver in the works...but last i checked it was not yet ready for release.....hmmm actually now I remeber that almost every distro ive used has frozen when dealing w/ the wireless card except Fedora Core 4 however FC4 had problems detecting the Wifi card 90% (once it was detected thou it worked flawlessly..) hmm well if anyone has any suggestions perhaps ive missed something or theres an update out there that i dont know about...thanx for all the help!
p.s. Dont get me wrong (i have said this b4) arch is my favorite Distro. I feel that i have control and also it feels like its MY distro I choose wut goes on it so not alot of clutter..etc. Its just a very good distor....lets just hope the random freezing stops...

I have experienced hard freezes too. I haven't done any memory test yet, but I think it's kernel 2.6.15 related. I'm currently running 2.6.14 without any freezes. I would get the freezes while playing a video with xine or music with quodlibet. Curiously, it wouldn't freeze with mplayer or moreamp. However, it once froze while running neither of these apps. I haven't really had time to pin down the problem. I'll probably wait for 2.6.15.1 to get in repo. BTW, I'm not running gnome or using ndiswrapper/wifi. You could try to downgrade your kernel.

hmm sounds like a good idea...but i dont want to have to compile a kernel or anything...is the 2.6.14 kernel in the repository?

No but it's probably in your cache if you haven't cleared it:
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel26-2.6.14.5-1.pkg.tar.gz
Other 2.6.14.x packages will work too if you don't have that particular version.

As long as you don't run a windows machine you should set your clock up to UTC -its the preferred linux/unix way. I've always used ntpdate <location.of.stratum.clock> but you should be able to do it manualy through date. You'll need to reboot afterwards or do hwclock --systohc to adjust your hardware clock. NOTE: when you use UTC your hardware clock will always be different from your software clock unless you live at GMT. The logic behind UTC is that computers across the world can communicate with accurate timestamps as long as they all follow the same 'universal time'.

ok...so i was using the comp. again this time my internet connection was very close ....and yet it still froze....it was working perfectly the whole day...then i leave...come back and out of no where the comp is frozen....im now thinkin its either A. FireFox B. something graphical..(like the Nvidia drivers..) C. the kernel...i will install the 2.6.14 kernel and see what happens...

I have had hard freezes for no reason too: it actually seemed to get worse when the box was idling. I dusted out the heatsink on the CPU and it's been running for a few days now.
It's strange because before the dusting the CPU was about 55C max. Now it's 10C lower. Still, 55C shouldn't cause such instability.

hmm ill try that....ya i have installed the 2.6.14 kernel...and I have switched to xfce4 and Epiphany rather then Gnome and FireFox....firegfox always crashes...epiphany thus far has been good to me...we shall see what happens....i plan on eventually swtich to e17 or something better looking..then xfce4's default settings...(any suggestions?) Ill keep yall posted....The problem is that its not something you can test...its runs videos fine etc. So i cant do anything to test it...say....is there a way i can have my comp. log everything that happens so if it freezes i can go back and maybe find out y....cuz that would be a wonderful thing.

Are you running gdm and kdm at the same time? If yes, it might cause a conflict of some sort.
Are you using xorg from testing?

oh that i think was due to a reinstall of the kernel and i was trying to see if anything graphical would come up... I am runing the xorg that came off the newest cd.
does anyone know where i can get a diffrent version of gnome because i think thats whats messed up....

pacman -S gnome...
have a look at your /etc/inittab, for there the last line (probably) should be like
x:5:respawn:/opt/gnome/bin/gdm -nodaemon
If it is like this, have a look at your /etc/rc.conf into the line beginning with:
DAEMONS=(...)
If there is a daemon called gdm or kdm, just delete it.... then you can be sure to only start 1 display manager at time...

ya its not loading two gdms or a gdm or a kdm or anything like that....that was an error for something else...it seems that none of the errors have anything to do with two Window Managers loading at the same time...it seems what i posted may not have been relavent...i looked into the logs a bit more and found the last things that were happening b4 the crash

Maybe the gnome configs are messed up. Backup and remove:
~/.gconf
~/.gconfd
~/.gnome*
and relogin.
