Problem with FB and X
I have this problem with vesafb a long time. I patched my kernels with vesa-tng to avoid it but know i have to face it. 
When i boot with vga=0x317 for ex. resolution changes as it should but if i start X none of the ttys is available anymore.
No problems with liveCds and the same options.
I'm completely at a loss, any help is appreciated.

This is probably related to your video driver - and there's no real way around it, beyond waiting for the driver makes to fix it. For instance, my nvidia driver used to do that, and on the new version, it doesn't happen.
You can probably downgrade your video driver and find one that works.
