Getting 3 monitors to work across 2 nvidia cards

I've had a two-monitor setup with xrandr for awhile, and I'm trying to add a third one. The hurdle I'm trying to get over however, is that xrandr doesn't see all available monitors. I assume this has something to do with my X11 config.

For some reason, it shows only 1 of the DVI ports connected. I have two video cards, so DVI-I-0, 1, or 3 should be the other monitor that it's not recognizing. Also possibly unrelated, both cards have an HDMI port, but only one is showing up at all. This works on Windows, so there's nothing wrong with the cards or monitors.

This file isn't enough to set up a 3 monitor display, but I feel like it should be enough to see all the monitors in the xrandr output. Anyone know what is going on?

After some messing around, it seems that SLI causes some issues. I'm also wondering if there's a way to get them all in the same X screen. I currently have the original 2 (on one video card) in one screen, and the other one in it's own screen. I can't seem to find a way to put them all together, and I assume this has something to do with the hardware.

Now I can't get the rotation to work properly. I could post this to another thread if necessary, but I'll just post here first. I'm trying to get the following setup: Left screen (DVI-I-3) rotated to the right, middle screen (DVI-I-2) normal, and monitor 3 (HDMI-0) rotated left. I'm using these xrandr commands, but they don't seem to be doing anything (the first one should still work, as that's what I was using before). At any rate, here's my new xrandr stuff and xorg.conf.

Is it possible to get all monitors to be on the same X screen despite the fact that they are on different cards? I want to be able to move between all 3 monitors freely.

So after doing some more research, I've determined that I need to use new xrandr features in order to get this to work. I'm not exactly sure how, but this thread: http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.p … gpu-works! demonstrates what I want to do, but I don't really know how to accomplish it. When I run xrander --listproviders, this is the results I get:

$ xrandr --listproviders
Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x279 cap: 0x1, Source Output crtcs: 2 outputs: 5 associated providers: 0 name:NVIDIA-0

$ xrandr --screen 1 --listproviders
Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x4fd cap: 0x1, Source Output crtcs: 2 outputs: 5 associated providers: 0 name:NVIDIA-1

It seems that somehow the providers are tied to different screens. How can I stop that from happening?

i kind of have the same problems you have but i'm running 2 ATI Cards (HD7870 and HD 5870)
whatever i try (cant remember all different settings i tried) i can only get the monitors of one card to display anything else than a black image with a whit cross as cursor.

the only method i get all monitors (3x LCD 1x TV) working is to enable Xinerama 8which kills video performance.
Sorry i can help you but i'll monitor this thread, maybe someone has a solution for this problem.

I read on a german archlinux forum that someone got it working by attaching all Monitors to one GPU, but that doesn't help me much because of the lack of a DVI port....

and if you ever get this working please share your working xorg.conf :>

Specifically this part:

4) multiple GPU rendering - This replaces Xinerama.

Plus that other thread I posted seems to be doing exactly what I'm trying to do now. I just don't really know how to  use this software and I'm slowly bringing it all together. Let's hope I get somewhere with it eventually and I can add a page to the wiki about it or something.

I'm attempting to set up two monitors on two GTX650s. Hopefully the answer this thread comes up with will work for both of us.

Ok, I've decided to start working on this after some time off, and I've made a bit of progress, but now I'm stuck again.

I've started using Base Mosaic mode to get all the monitors on one screen. I'd rather I could do this with just xrandr, but it looks like for now this is the only option as I still don't know how to get the xrandr to work right. The problem now is in the rotations, when I rotate in the xorg file, they only sort-of rotate (I had this problem before when I was just configuring without Mosaic). If I try to use xrandr now, my entire system freezes and I have to powercycle the machine. I tried to take a screen shot of it, but it turned out correct. I guess X is doing it's thing correctly, and maybe there's a bug in the nvidia driver. I might take a photo of my screens a little bit later, but right now I'll attempt to describe it. The monitors are not rotated, but they have a resolution as if they did. It's like the resolution is 1080x1920, and they're facing the wrong way. As a result everything is squished and sideways. If anyone has more information that would be great. I'm going to head over to #nvidia on freenode to see if they can figure this out.

CTAG, you can probably just enable Mosaic in nvidia-settings, and that should work. Volle, I would suggest running "xrandr --listproviders" and post what the output is.

Thanks for the update, miscsubbin.

I've been tacking away at this, and haven't gotten far. To be much too brief: I've gone through Xinerama, Mosaic, SLI, Xrandr in several combinations and none work. I'm sure that I've exhausted nvidia-settings of options.

A bit more information on my separate thread. Will update soon after writing this post.

Right now I've reverted to the 319.76 Nvidia driver, since the current one in pacman has a broken xinerama.
Even with this, xrandr only sees one screen... I feel that this is a big deal.

I'm going to plug away on trying to either get Xrandr to wake up and rescue me, or figure out how to write the xorg.conf file correctly.

I'm not really sure what --listproviders does, and a quick Google search hasn't yielded much..

$ xrandr --listproviders 
Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x279 cap: 0x1, Source Output crtcs: 4 outputs: 6 associated providers: 0 name:NVIDIA-0

So, I only get 1 provider... What do you get with this command?

WAT?! It's magic, and the online documentation I'm finding for this stuff, mainly xorg in general, is almost as bad as the online documentation for C++...

Now, we're getting somewhere! I can see the other monitor. Now I just have to set the mode and position and we should be good.

Ok, this actually works. However, if I try to rotate that monitor, Xorg segfaults. Looks like this is the end of the line as far as I can see. I'm going to possibly post to a mailing list somewhere and see what I can do. I'll keep this thread updated in the meantime.

EDIT: I've been playing around with this, and it's buggy as all hell. I'm going to continue researching this though.

My Setup is the following:
I've got 1 AMD HD7870 (PCI:1:0:0) where a Screens (DFP10) and my TV (DFP9) is connected and i've got 1 AMD HD5870 (PCI:2:0:0) where 2 Screens are connected (DFP3 & DFP4).
They are standing on my desk like this:
DFP3    DFP10   DFP4                          DFP9

Software Versions:
xorg-server: 1.14.5-1
Video drivers: catalyst-test-pxp 13.11-10
Kernel: 3.12.5-1-ARCH

I really don't know why it is working know (i tried to setup everything with amdcccle which wasn't working as expected and i did tweak my xorg.conf by hand.
My xrandr outputs are kind of strange (or maybe expected but atleast not by me:)

so xrandr sees only the screen i'm running the console window in. I don't get it but maybe that's intended.

I hope my xorg.conf will help you a little bit, i'm going to track down this nasty segmentation fault steam is returning (segfault on line 755).

Wow, well you've made much more progress than myself. I'm interested to see that the xorg.conf works so well, are you able to drag windows between monitors without Xinerama?

I've more or less given up with nVidia. It turns out that the company pulled support for features and has brought about a change in their driver that renders Xinerama useless on Archlinux. It's disappointing and hurtful to see their product perform so poorly, and to be told that it was my fault for expecting an expensive, proprietary graphics card to deliver.

As it is, my xorg.conf looks pretty similar, I'm creating a new Screen object for each monitor and manually positioning them.

Right now KDE and awesome are the only window managers that seems to halfway work with multiple X screens, and I'm simply trying to adjust to the new work flow as best possible.

(Steam works on one monitor for me.... are you sure it's not just something wacky with the fglrx drivers?)

no i'm not. Even KDE's "move to screen" shortcut does not (yet) work.

I thought nvidia's linux support was much better than AMD's but maybe i'm misinformed.

I haven't tried awesome yet but it took me ~3 hours of testing and smashing my keyboard while trying to get multi screen working with lxde (which i couldn't get working)... After switching to KDE it did work from the start...

Steam is working when i start x without an xorg.conf at all ... atleast with lxde, i didn't test it with KDE yet but the drivers seem to be ok. I don't knwo what the problem is but maybe it gets fixed by valve sometime.

Yeah, KDE is the only thing that halfway worked out-of-the-box. Awesome took considerably more time to setup and I still have issues with the keyboard not changing screens with the mouse.

Maybe Nvidia's support is better than ATI's. If it is though, I feel incredibly bad for the people stuck with ATI... I dunno, it just sucks.

Hrm, good luck with Steam. I bet it'll only be getting much, much better in the near future with Valve's commitment to being amazing.
