Hey all, I'm new to Arch and I'm loving it so I'm trying to get myself figured out. I downloaded the AMD driver (13.11 v9.4) from the AMD site and I installed that package as I would previously with Ubuntu, Mint, Debian and Manjaro. I know the driver was only listing compatibility to kernel 3.11 but I went through with it anyway. Upon reboot it seemed like X didn't want to start so I switched terminals and ran the ATI uninstaller then ran pacman -S xorg. Once I rebooted again the screen would flicker to black then go to a distorted graphics and back to black. From there I am unable to switch to a terminal I can log in to and run any commands. Would it be worth taking the time to change grub to boot to the CLI and fix the installation or would it be better off doing a fresh install using Vi0L0's repositories for the drivers? I would have no problem doing a full system wipe, I'm anal about backing up my /home and I don't mind spending the time putting everything back together, I just don't want to run into a headache chasing the problem or any instability once I get X working again.

I would at least try booting into target=multi-user.target and trying to install one of the packages from Vi0l0's repository (I would recommend the catalyst-hook package and enable the service),

I recommend doing this as well. Install catalyst-hook, enable and start the service, run mkinitcpio.

Also, don't forget to set nomodeset, blacklist radeon, and generate a xorg.conf (aticonfig --initial).

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Okay, got myself back to the command line, added the repository and the key, but now I'm running into a weird dependency issue...

resolving dependencies...
looking for inter-conflicts...
:: catalyst-utils and mesa-libgl are in conflict (libgl). Remove mesa-libgl? [y/N] y
:: catalyst-utils and libcl are in conflict. Remove libcl? [y/N] y
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: ati-dri: requires mesa-libgl
:: glamor-egl: requires mesa-libgl

So a part of catalyst is in conflict with mesa-libgl, yet part of ati-dri requires it so I can't install with it and I can't install without it? hmm

ati-dri is the open source Mesa Gallium3D radeon driver -- it's in direct conflict with Catalyst. Additionally, anything else Mesa related needs to be removed -- the exception being if you have switchable graphics on a laptop and are using the PXP version (because the Intel driver needs Mesa). ati-dri and glamor-egl should be removed as well. Mesa is an alternate driver from Catalyst -- it's the open source driver. So you need to remove it all (and blacklist radeon in /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf, just to be safe).

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Awesome. Got the extra stuff removed, catalyst-hook installed. Blacklisted, enabled, mkinitcpio passed, now just to reboot and see what happens!

~Update~
And I'm in! Thanks a bunch folks.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Mojtabazn, many users of asus and mobility Radeon 5000 series have backlight problems. Catalyst 13.4 works for me. You can take a look at http://ati.cchtml.com/ .  As far as i know there isn't solution to the problem since March, both linux and Windows. AMD never again.

So you need to remove it all (and blacklist radeon in /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf, just to be safe).

it is not 100% necessary to remove mesa and its libraries. In fact, in order for certain applications to report the correct driver usage, such as the gnome-control-center "System Info" tab, you need to have mesa installed. Otherwise it reports as "Unknown driver" instead of FGLRX. I do agree that it is vital to remove ati-dri and xf86-video-ati

I don't really know what I'm doing.

If I have Radeon cards do I install the free ati or catalyst?

Is it normal to have below 10 fps on 3D games like AlienArena?

I would go with AMD Catalyst. Just so you know, I get around 30 FPS with Team Fortress 2, with around 12 - 16 players on the map.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

If I remember correctly I could play Alien Arena just fine a few years ago using a HD 4***, so I think you should be able to run it just fine with some configuration fiddling.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm not sure whether the following bug is known. I'm not event sure, whether it's catalyst bug (well, with free drivers I haven't such issue). Anyway it makes me crazy every time I accidenaltly face it. X server crashes when in firefox I'm trying to drag any image wrapped around with hyperlink, <a..><img... /></a>. Just press mouse button on it and try to move the cursor.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I haven't used Firefox a lot lately, but I just tried it and I can't reproduce your problem. I tried it using the catalyst driver from Vi0l0's repository with the following html:

<a href="https://www.archlinux.org"><img src="https://d11xdyzr0div58.cloudfront.net/static/logos/archlinux-logo-dark-90dpi.ebdee92a15b3.png"></a>

It doesn't go terribly smoothly but it works.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I just got a new desktop with a radeon 7770 card, so I'm new to running amd drivers on Arch (catalyst-hook).  Previously I was using a laptop with intel graphics, so I never really had to worry about updates.  For those who have been using Vi0's repo (using catalyst), how terrible of an idea is it to be regularly updating to the latest xorg and kernel?  I know that the latest stable driver supports xorg 1.14 and kernel 3.12 (currently running 3.12.5 with no issues and catalyst 13.12-1), but what's your experience with updates?  Do these drivers regularly break?  Should I freeze xorg and kernel and manually update them after checking the thread / AUR package page?

Also, I'm curious as to why the catalyst repo must go first in the repos list.  Is that to prevent the base repo from installing an incompatible kernel or xorg version?

tl;dr - what are the beverages in this bar like?

Thanks.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Have a drink or two and see for yourself. Catalyst isn't known for its refined taste though.

EDIT: Sorry I got too caught up in your joke. I haven't had any serious issues with Vi0l0's repository and a hd7950. I do build the modules myself after every kernel update to be feel sure.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

hrm do catalyst drivers influence hdmi sound output?
Since the last update I get distorted sound via hdmi if the displays have been put to sleep by way of time out before.
After a reboot everythings fine again ....

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I noticed one interesting thing with the latest catalyst. If I don't use xorg.conf generated by $ aticonfig --adapter=all --initial , I just can't adjust screen brightness. What the ... !?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

How can i use catalyst 12.4 version with current core kernel?
I want to use old driver because of my card hd7470m works only with old driver. I have black screen with other and newer versions http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=903
In ubuntu I'm using fglrx-expepimental-9 package and only this package works.
Can I get old packages from here http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/cata … 4k/x86_64/ and install? If i can, how?
Thanks

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Everytime I install a new kernel update, I get an error message that the install failed. After checking in /var/log/catalyst-install.log:

"2013-12-27 09:00:23
Building fglrx module for 3.12.6-1-ARCH kernel ...
--------
Kernel header files are absent: directory /usr/lib/modules/3.12.6-1-ARCH/build doesn't exist! Game over"

This message shows each and every time I install a new kernel.

In order to get catalyst to work properly, I must re-run sudo pacman -S catalyst-hook, at which point it removes the old module and rebuilds for the new kernel successfully.

Something about the catalyst-hook package is failing upon kernel upgrades.

I don't really know what I'm doing.

You have to update linux-headers first.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Or just run

# catalyst_build_module all

after the update, when the kernel headers are installed. If you enabled catalyst-hook that should take care of this automagically I believe, somewhere on boot or shutdown.
